Need help with choosing a new scope
« on: October 11, 2012, 08:24:40 AM »
What power scope should I buy for target shooting at 50-100?  I'm going to be shooting a Savage MK II FV 22lr bolt gun.  I'm looking at three different powers.  After I decided on power then I'll zero in on the make and model I want.

1. 4x32

2. 3-9X36  •Adjustable Objective

3. 4.5-14x42 •Adjustable Objective  This power scope was suggested to me by SWFA when I asked him the same question.  This seemed like a lot of scope for this purpose.

thanks in advance,

Chuck

3-9X looks good to me.  14X is pretty excessive for a 22lr rifle at only 100 yds.

50-100 yards, any scope will do.

The adjustable ones are fun, though.

I have a 4-16 on one of my 10/22's and its cool because you can do surgery at 50 yards with it.

Heard good things about the Nikon Prostaff 4x32 Rimfire.  Parallax setting: 50 yards. Currently $109.95 at Optics Planet.  Length: 11.5 in.

I opted for the Leupold VX-1 2-7x28 .22 Rimfire. Parallax Setting: 60 yards.  Approximately twice the price of the Nikon Prostaff. Length: 9.9 in.

4x power is a little weak for an accurate bolt action while using good ammo imo

3-9x40 works fine for me with my .22 at the range. the gun cant outshoot the scope, and i cant outshoot the gun yet.
the 14x power may come in handy at 100 yards though.

bushnell has $25-75 in rebates right now. 3-9x40 trophy xlt is a steal with the butler creek scope covers included for like 120 shipped after rebate

I have two BSA Sweet 22 scopes. One on my plinker and one on my target .22 rifle. It has parallax adjustment, compensated drop turrets for 50 to 175 yds and 36gr to 40gr bullets. While very clear up to about 12-14 power it does get a little not so clear at the higher power. You really don't need those powers at 100yds but as KK said, I do surgery on my targets using the higher power. But for the price it can't be beat. Check out Natchez shooting supplies to see if they still have last year's model in stock and on clearance sale. Got both of mine for $50ea. Normally $169.00 scope. These scopes have great reviews on the .22 rifle forums.

I got a cheap Barska 3-9x32 from Amazon on my M&P 15-22, it's fun and gets the job done
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001JJCHWK/?tag=2ahawaii-20

When I was researching scopes, I came to the conclusion that 4x just wouldn't be enough. I settled on 3-9x because it's adjustable and left funds available for other things. If you plan on moving the scope around onto larger caliber rifles then I would suggest getting high quality 4.5-14x42, buy once cry once.

I got a extra bsa scope for .22s at home. It's a 3x9 if you were intersected.

I have a Simmons .44 Mag Truplex Side Focus (AO) Riflescope 4-12X44 on my 10/22.  Excellent scope for around $110.00.
