SUPPORT HB2464!!!
In the last 24 hours we have seen a number of anti self-defense groups rallying their members to oppose HB2464. They call this a “shoot first” or “murder bill”. THIS IS NOT THE CASE AND YOU NEED TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!
Currently in Hawaii law, criminals have more rights to self-preservation than victims do. Worse yet, the victims can be prosecuted for defending themselves from criminals. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
HB2464 corrects this by removing the duty to retreat for those using self-defense in Hawaii. This means when threatened with deadly force, serious bodily injury, rape, kidnapping, or sodomy a person doesn’t have to attempt to escape before using deadly force themselves. This is not a shoot first bill, as mainland groups are claiming, but a victims' rights bill.
38 other states have similar provisions in their use-of-force laws. That means more than two-thirds of the country protects victims by allowing them to defend themselves without exposure to additional dangers while attempting to escape.
The same arguments against this bill were made in 2012, when Hawaii enacted its version of the castle doctrine. Castle doctrine got rid of the requirement to retreat from your home before using deadly force. It allowed people in the home to protect themselves and their loved ones without the fear of additional injury while trying to flee their property. This bill would do the same, but for anyone, everywhere.
We need your help to make sure this bill passes into law.
