Floor votes! Call your House Reps. Deadline 3-7-22
« on: February 27, 2022, 01:15:24 PM »

Floor votes are coming up soon so contact your district House representative via phone or email and tell them what you think about these bills.  Our goal is to have 1,000 people to participate, so have your family members, friends, and coworkers to help out.

Find your House rep here:  https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/fyl

OPPOSE HB1732 – Prohibits possession of electric guns on the grounds of or in government buildings, public schools, airports, transit stations, and the bus/mass transit.  This prevents you from protecting yourself at these places at a time of rising violent crime.
https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HB&billnumber=1732&year=2022

OPPOSE HB2075 – Requires in-person inspection for firearms registration and police stations for: firearms from out of state, private person to person transfers, and “Ghost guns.”  This violates the Federal District judges order in the 2A victory Yukutake vs Conners lawsuit which resulted in easier and quicker remote firearms registration available now.

SUPPORT HB2464 – Removes the duty to retreat when using deadly force to protect yourself from death or serious bodily injury.  This bill allow you to defend yourself better and possibly prevent criminal liability if you do so.

2nd Reading floor votes coming up over the next several days for these bills.  2nd reading should be today or tomorrow, 3rd reading on Tuesday.  Get your calls and emails in, we're still short of 1,000.  Sooner we stop these the less work we have to do later.

GET THOSE LAST MINUTE CALLS AND EMAILS IN BY TOMORROW MORNING, VOTE IS TOMORROW

SUPPORT HB2464!!!
In the last 24 hours we have seen a number of anti self-defense groups rallying their members to oppose HB2464. They call this a “shoot first” or “murder bill”. THIS IS NOT THE CASE AND YOU NEED TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!
Currently in Hawaii law, criminals have more rights to self-preservation than victims do.  Worse yet, the victims can be prosecuted for defending themselves from criminals.  THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
HB2464 corrects this by removing the duty to retreat for those using self-defense in Hawaii.  This means when threatened with deadly force, serious bodily injury, rape, kidnapping, or sodomy a person doesn’t have to attempt to escape before using deadly force themselves.  This is not a shoot first bill, as mainland groups are claiming, but a victims' rights bill.
38 other states have similar provisions in their use-of-force laws. That means more than two-thirds of the country protects victims by allowing them to defend themselves without exposure to additional dangers while attempting to escape.
The same arguments against this bill were made in 2012, when Hawaii enacted its version of the castle doctrine. Castle doctrine got rid of the requirement to retreat from your home before using deadly force. It allowed people in the home to protect themselves and their loved ones without the fear of additional injury while trying to flee their property. This bill would do the same, but for anyone, everywhere.
We need your help to make sure this bill passes into law.
Contact your district House Representative NOW!  Call them (leave a message) and send an email, let them know you live in their district, and support the right to self-defense.  Tell them to SUPPORT HB2464.

As I somewhat expected, My "rep" Lowen declined to respond to my letter criticizing (politely I thought) her opposing the right to self defense.

At least a word salad would have meant she read it, but silence implies a staffer just deleted it.  They do not GAS what we think.

Thanks for trying.  It'd be great if we can get some of these reps switched out, but sometimes we just gotta live with em.  Some of them do change over time.  Not overnight but over a long time.  There's been surprise votes before, not often but they pop up.  It takes several of their constituants developing that relationship and they start to change a little over time.  Or after they experience traumatic crime themselves and wake up.  Many others would vote 2A, but donors and orgs, and especially the party, don't want them to.  Going against the party keeps them from moving up the ranks, passing bills they introduce, and reduces funds and projects for their district.  It's like Tulsi speaking at CPAC and attacking Harris and Biden puts her in bad standing in her party, she has nothing to lose now.

Articulation is key. So really not too much of a concern. The taser bill is more worrysome.

No police officers will be able to afford to live here soon so I wouldn't worry too much about overly restrictive self defense laws more than a couple years out.
