Anyone know where to buy bulk lentils? I've been trying to get used to beans but they don't agree with my innards very well.

We grew up eating pinto beans at least once a week.  We were what you'd call poor, but always had plenty to eat.

One way to have good protein at low cost was beans.  We had Navy beans (white beans), pintos, lima, and pork'n'beans all the time.

Anyway, one trick I learned from my grandmother was to add a can of 7Up or other non-cola soda to the pot of beans.  It  reduces the gas it causes.  Also, soaking the beans for 4-8 hours and draining them helps.

When we had pintos at school, I was confused why the other kids joked about farting.  I never associated that with pintos, because the beans we had at home never had that effect on us.

The current trick to reduce gas in beans is to add a small amount of baking soda.  I imagine the effect is similar to how a can of carbonated soda works.  I haven't tried that, but I'll keep this in mind the next time I cook beans.

Someone told me about adding an onion right when you start cooking as well.

Regarding bean gas tricks, a recipe for dry beans suggested boiling and pouring out the water once or twice, and the gas went with it. Haven't tried it yet...

I might have to search where to buy lentils in bulk also.  I usually buy a pkg. every week when I grocery shop whether I use it or not.  That way the pantry always has several pkgs. at any given time.

Problem is this is the third week my local Times store had empty shelves, not only lentils but other dried legumes as well.

Lots of dried split pea if you like those.

Just an update, for some reason the Times store I shop at still have no lentils.

I just happened to be at Walmart Mililani and saw 4 pkgs. on the shelf.  So in the spirit of not being greedy or hoarding, I bought 3. 

Health food stores sell split peas and lentils in bulk, not sure abt price.
