I saw that at Times and thought that was a mistake.
It's gotta be a mistake.

Just browsed through Amazon and a few other sites.

Some paper plates are going for $1 per plate or more, usually in packs of 10.

If the paper is rated "compostable," that makes them cost more, too.  Then add a premium for "designer."   

For 170 plates, this is not outside the average prices.  At $22.49, 170 plates comes to $0.13/plate.

Is it really gouging, or simply the result of inflation and high energy prices. 

In the end, consumers pay for it all.

And my retirement income will never change......

Paper goods are very expensive now.  I only use paper plates and bowls if I am eating something that is hard to wash, like spaghetti,  over easy eggs, etc.  That price is about what it goes for now, even at Costco.

I'm going to walmart and buy cheap foam plates before those get too expensive too.
They all go into the oahu hpower plant anyway, right?

I've been unable to find the paper bowls I usually get from Costco lately.  About 6 months ago, it took maybe a month from them being out until I bought.  Once those were sold out, I haven't seen more come in.  That's at both the Waipio and Iwilei stores.

I went last weekend to Costco in Waipio, and all the shelves seemed a bit bare.  I've noticed a cyclical situation with the shelves running down to a low level of products and then being replenished a few weeks later.

That wasn't the case prior to the supply chain becoming news.

Same here.  Sometimes when I want to eat toast, I will use paper plates.  I used to throw the plates away after but I started thinking, just wash them because the toast is just crumbs and the plate looks like it's never been used.

I then use these "recycled" plates for stuff like spoon and ladle rests that I place near the stove when I'm cooking stuff like stews, soups, and spaghetti.

Full disclosure:  I do this with the "Chinet" type of plates which we usually buy.  These plates are very sturdy, expensive, and stand up to a light washing.

Retirees like me has to constantly look at ways to stretch our dollar.

I have learned that this strategy does not work well with toilet paper.

I took some paper plates to work and hid them in a drawer so I got something when somebody brings donuts or cake.

This is becoming all too common in workplace lunchrooms.  Other people's clearly labeled lunches, drinks, and now paper plates.

Another alternative is buy parchment paper sheets and use it to cover a regular or paper plate. Parchment paper can be microwaved or even go in the oven.  Throw away the paper after you pau eat. Plate should be clean. Can buy 480 9x13 sheets on Amazon for $19.

I did go to walmart to stock up on paper plates. There were zero foam plates which were cheap.

So I ended up buying one pack of Dixie and one pack of walmart plates. 100 per pack- 8.5 inch plates.
They look similar. Cost was less than $7 per 100,.... so about $14 for the 200 plates.
I can live with that.

The Dixie was a little heavier than Walmart...but not by much.
They are exactly the same size.
They have exactly the same construction,
They are probably the same plate.
Dixie cost is about 25cents more per 100.
Not a big deal. Plenty good enough for the typical picnic.

Since I was already on Amazon, I checked out the Dixie bowls I've been out of.

Found 20 oz bowls -- 156 count (6 pks of 26 bowls) for $19.84, or about 12 - 13 cents/bowl.

I'm good with that price.  These are slightly more expensive than the mid-size paper plates at Costco when I can find them.

Costco had the big rolls of parchment paper earlier this year. I use them for wrapping guns, after some light lubrication with mineral oil. Doc Pake is so cheap he even reuses the plastic container which Costco uses to package their roast chickens.
