HB 1567 ABSTRACT

Eliminates the use of monetary bail and requires defendants to be released on their own recognizance
for certain nonviolent offenses, subject to certain exclusions. Requires the department of public safety
to take steps to provide videoconferencing to a defendant who chooses to participate in a bail report
interview via videoconference. (CD1)

In summarizing why he vetoed the bill, Ige said, in part, “The bill does not adequately address
several important issues, including the need to secure the appearance of defendants and it
deprives judges of the ability to exercise discretion on a case by-case basis.”

Basically, he said eliminating bail eliminates the only thing that makes many defendants come to court when ordered to appear.

Duh!  That pretty much describes why bail exists in the first place.  The only other way to compel court appearances is to keep them locked up until trial.

Only a dope could argue that requiring bail is a bad thing.  It might have some bad aspects, but without a good alternative, we need to use something to force law breakers to show up for trial.

I agree this applies to both the guilty AND the innocent, but it's a better system than catch and release or mandatory incarceration awaiting trial.

First there was overwhelming support for this bill.  It was sent to the governor for signing.  Then all of a sudden the author of the bill has a change of heart and asks the governor to please veto the bill as is, pending further review.

Meanwhile all the county mayors, HPD, and several other agencies petition the governor to veto the bill.

The governor himself criticizes the request, also noting that this has never happened before, all while sporting a smirking idiot-looking smile on his face.  Like everything is a f**kn joke or something.

I have a message to the "leaders" in our government.  The ones who make the "laws".

Fix our jails. Make them clean, safe, 3 good meals daily, and a decent place to sleep.
Don't let them out without bail - period.
Make sure your guards, are professional.
Heavy penalties if they aren't.  Real heavy penalties.
Make sure the accused get a speedy trial.

Y'all know if you took all the money you wasted on the Choo, Choo.
very few will use, you could have fixed the wreak of a justice
system in Hawaii?
