Tsunami
« on: October 27, 2012, 11:06:26 PM »
I just left my rental home in Kapolei......which is just outside the tsunami inundation area.

The road (Ft Weaver Rd) to high ground out of Ewa Beach is packed.

A lot of the people on the West coast are driving up to Makakilo....also packed. But the H-1 to the East is basically empty.

My neighbors around my rental aren't concerned. I thought they would leave. I talked to one neighbor who has no relatives on the island and told them to come to my home in Pearl City which is on higher ground..........if nothing happens they can return to their place. They declined but I gave them my address & phone # anyway. Really nice people.....hope nothing happens to them.

When I first heard the sirens I thought we were being attacked and not being hit with some kind of natural disaster, because of how quick the alert went on.

Some people need to wake up. There are always some idiots who venture out to the beach etc. to watch the ebb and flow. When the tsunami hit Thailand and other parts of Asia, those were the first people to get swept out. Lucky so far that these tsunami events were not as expected.

Its the nature of it, unfortunately. The early warning goes out as soon as possible to give people the most time to prepare but until a wave happens somewhere there aren't too many ways to be sure if and where it is going to hit.

That creates the "Boy who cried wolf" scenario where people feel justified ignoring yet another tsunami warning and heading down to the beach to see what is normally a fairly small surge, if anything.

One of those times it won't be.

Drives the tsunami guys nuts. They've gone to great lengths to create a system where no one ever need die from a tsunami again... if everyone just gets away from the water when the warning is sounded. No, there isn't a gigantic wave every time and it is inconvenient. Not nearly as inconvenient as being down by the water when a big surge does come.
