My friend told me I'm too big for one for anything other than short trips. In 2023 we will be allowed to import the new versions where the front wheels are closer to the bumper which apparently gives them a better approach angle for 4wd.

Had one for about a month last year. Subaru Sambar. Loved it except for one major thing for me. It was annoying to deal with every which whoever wanted to talk about the minitruck. Ended up trading it for a motorcycle + cash. My favorite thing was the low height of the bed/tray. It could make it over Red Hill. I could hit 65 (down hill)

Mine came at about 75k miles with maintenance written in kana on a service sticker near the drivers door jamb/dash area. With pretty recent service I was comfortable in neglecting any issues that came up other than fluids.

I'll probably be getting another one, a van, or one of those kei sports cars... eventually.

What was the mpg?

MPG was about 27, freeway/town. Not a lot of heavy hauling.

thanks for the insights. wow I was expecting MPG to be a bit better - in the mid 30s. I wish American trucks were a lot smaller. Hard to find those older mid 90 Toyota Tacomas anymore. I found a few Hi Luxs but they want more than a brand new 4Runner.

A lot of kei trucks have small 3 cyl turbocharged engines and 4wd. Super fun to drive/drift around in the snow! You could buy them for about $1-2k when I was living in Japan about 5 years ago. $300-500 for the older ones. Its crazy that they are selling for over $8k here!

My good friend in Nalo has a 95 Tacoma xcab 4x4, 5 spd stick in really nice condition and AC blows cold. Truck shows 220k on odometer,  but he had engine and trans completely rebuilt at 206k I have pulled a 5000 lb trailer up the H3 with it and engine temp doesn't pass the half mark..  Physically he is getting to the point he won't be able to drive soon.  At that time I will buy it and ship it to the BI, where thieves will want your truck more than you do.

Mine had AC, but I didn't run it too often. It enhanced the smell of cigarettes and natto.

This is what I was hoping for in the Ford Maverick but unfortunately it isn't really very small. Smaller but not a lot.

Handled the massive beams I loaded onto the truck racks like a boss though. I think we will see an even smaller version in the not too distant future.

Keep in mind that when the kei trucks are brought in they are already 25 years old. I would not have a big problem with that other than the fact guys are asking $8,000+ for them! I don't know if they are putting in new engines or what.

I am thinking of getting one when my kids are old enough to drive. Doesn't have a lot of seats for lots of friends and they aren't real fast so most safe in that sense. I don't know if they have airbags or not

Guy at the beach has a daihastu micro van.  He says all parts have to be ordered from Japan. Has AC, but it needs charge, and said sounds like the compressor is going bad.  Nice vehicle, he said he has about $8k into it, not sure if that’s worth the hassles, unless you just relish to be different. Not sure if shops will work on it, if not you’ll have to be handy.

decided it wasn't worth it. Close to 30 years old and parts like rubber aren't going to last. Looking for an older and smaller Toyota.
