All that $ invested into the gun and doesn't know the law.

All that $ invested into the gun and doesn't know the law.

The story left a lot of questions unanswered.

Was he a Hawaii Resident?
Was the gun purchased from a dealer, or transferred from a private seller?
If not a Hawaii resident, did he already transport the gun to Honolulu the same way without detection?
Did he buy the gun here illegally (not a Hawaii resident)?
Is it stolen?
Is the owner prohibited from possessing guns? If so, he can't be charged for not registering with HPD.

Several of those scenarios could explain why he didn't want to declare it.

He was headed to LA.  Understandable that he felt the need to arm himself as soon as he left the plane!

As for how much he spent on the gun, that's a big assumption.

It might be stolen or belong to a friend/family member.
It could have been a gift or inherited.

Nothing in the story tells us how he acquired it nor if he paid anything at all.  Just saying...

Very strange.  With one of the strictest gun laws in the nation, Hawaii gun owners know the pain in the a$$ laws governing every aspect of owning firearms.  Usually.

Trying to transport a handgun in carry-on is a no-no.  Not only at Hawaii's airports but every airport in the nation.  A no brainer.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

He could have got lucky coming into Hawaii and thought he could get lucky again going out.

Strange story.  Would like to know more.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

Could also be off-duty carry for law enforcement.  One of the deputys on Kauai got caught a few months ago for same thing.

Thought this was going to be a rant about the TSA circus at HNL.

Had to go through that idiocy this afternoon, took almost an hour to creep though the maze.  Then, they squawked at the paper boarding pass in my shorts pocket.
Paper bombs a new thing???

Driving in Honolulu after 12 years reminded me of why I despise that city.
