let's keep dentistry professional
« on: July 11, 2022, 07:32:47 AM »
Let me start off by saying that I appreciate all the work the dental profession has done in restoring and protecting my teeth. I appreciate the updates, organization, and events that they put on.

Having said that, there is something that needs to be addressed. Recently the Instagram and Facebook profile for the dental profession posted an ad that said "4 out of 5 dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients that chew gum".  I asked a dentist friend of mine and he told me that every day before they are in their offices, they see a lot of cavities in people who chew sugared gum. The 20% of dentists that are recommending sugared gum are responsible for this.

The problem I see is that the comment was not only without merit, it was also useless and spiteful. I don't know who is posting under the dental profession (I have my suspicions) but I think this is a bad image for the organization. People can post their theories on facebook and this forum under their own accounts but I think the dental profession should remain professional. Just my two cents.

Maybe if dentists quit asking me open ended questions when I’ve got a mouthful of their tools I’ll call off the hounds.

If I was a dentist, I would recommend to people that eat candy to eat sticky candy like Butterfinger and Big Hunk and brushing your teeth every other day.  Excessive brushing wears out the enamel.  Job security az why.

I have to say I am offended by the Facebook link.

First of all you made the ASSUMPTION that I even have a Facebook account, or that I even know WTF it is.

Secondly, I deleted the shit out of my Facebook account years ago. It was a grueling experience and you have to jump through hoops to get it deleted, and even now I don't even know if they REALLY deleted it or just shadow banned myself. I still have trauma about it WHICH YOU RE-TRIGGERED.

And I have not even mentioned how I feel about dentists.

(Mine is great BTW!)

I’m most offended on behalf of the people on this board who don’t have any teeth left.

I just had a 2 1/2 hour meeting with my dentist last week. There wasnt much in the way of conversation other than "You doing ok still?"

I know the way your brain works (tourettes) and am fine with that.  We all have different ways of thinking about topics. But what is a waste of time is after a certain point, the conversation goes in a circle, thus wasting time explaining why 1 chooses their stance on an issue.  This is why I don't chime in as often like before, I don't have the time anymore. But sometimes I do have the time so I will entertain your tourettes. Mainly so others can see the logical answer.

I don't see an issue with the 20% of dentist who disagree. Nothing is 100% and the table you lay on while they check your teeth may have some dark spots unable to see cavities. An alternative would be acceptable if the patient sits on the dentist lap facing up.

As for the 20% issue, you "friend" should tell us the 20% who disagree. I want to hear it from your "friends" mouth. There is a SOP for finding cavities and it's even posted online what tools dentist use.

You think it's unprofessional for the dental orgs state 4 of 5 which 20% is huge. I think it's unprofessional for Colgate and like companies to always use the 4 of 5. Why not 9 of 10 or 3.14 of 4.

You don't start many dental post, so the dental orgs and the 20% of dentist must have really hurt your feelings.
