If I carried my little colt, I would use ball.
230 gr ball would seriously demoralize a perp
============
I have some time while in covid isolation.
So let me elaborate.
My little colt is a nifty officer's model.
I have vetted it in competition and therefore trusted it enough to carry on a mainland trip.
The old 1911 geometry was never designed to feed hollow point ammo.
So when I shot it in competition, I only used 230 gr. RN.
It performed reliably and accurately as well. In fact, there was actually a stage where the IPSC target was set at about 40 or 50 yards.
The time limit was generous enough to allow me to drop to the roll-over prone position and engage.
The RO was impressed with the hits. LOL
IIRC I actually won a pretty nice prize for that match.
The point I'm trying to make is that the old 1911 platform is a fine defensive pistol, but I would never trust it with hollow point ammo.
I would trust the newer generation of polymer 45 auto pistols with HP ammo. They seem to have better feed geometry.
I encourage everyone to vet their defensive pistol with actual hollow pt ammo or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof.
