I’m starting to get that Judge Dredd Megacity One vibe
The problem governments are trying to solve is the existence of your freedom.

Nuclear power holds the best technically available solution, but as we saw with Japan, Mother Nature could cause real problems.

Then again, given the problems with major construction projects in HI, perhaps it's best we don't tackle nuclear power with local union labor and corrupt contractors.

No kidding, imagine a nuclear power plant built by the morons screwing up your rail thing left and right.

Politics and ignorance, with a fair amount of stupidity mixed in is Hawaii's problem.
There is no such thing as man caused global warming, that was created by "new world order"
types to break the economies of the world at least, the ones run by Democrats. China, Russia
have plenty of cheap electricity.
Coal costs 6-8 cents to produce a kilowatt of power, reliably and relatively cleanly with modern
generation designs.
Politics dictate that we can't do that,  so it is 38 to 48 cents a kilowatt hour(and more, Business rates are a lot higher)
for un-reliable solar and wind power and very old Diesel generation.
Just to make some fools feel good about themselves.
I like the idea of Thorium nukes, but there again the fools get in the way.
Cost of building here is outrageous once again the fools get in the way. Modular homes, Mobile homes
are very cheap in comparison and well made, once again the fools get in the way not much need for pricey
and rich contractors.
Food, we could be fairly self sufficient, but once again the fools get in the way.Since I've moved here to Hawaii
I seen at least two egg farms, three dairies, a ranch and a farm or two, at least two meat custom processors, all
run out of business by NIMBY fools.
I don't bother to leave because I'd just get the same fools on the mainland and the only places you can escape
the fools, the weather sucks.
if I"m going to live off Grid,  the BI is one of the best places to do it.

The Rail's concrete pillars are cracking.

Yeah, no can use local contractors.  Dey dunno how...or dey dunno how to read plans.

Best dey just go pour concrete slabs and sidewalks for housing at Kapolei.  At least when dey crack chances are nobody going die.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

We have a very skilled and talented workforce here in Hawaii. I think the problem lies in our leadership.

I agree about the quality and skills of the workforce,  the problem is the leaders they elect.
Those workers don't seem to be good judges of Character.

 :grrr:

Workers are only as skilled as they are trained and allowed to be.

If the materials (concrete, etc.) do not meet specs, it's on everyone: the worker, the supervisor and the owners who could have, and should have, ensured everything was at least to minimum specs.  Unfortunately, prices fluctuate over the long-ass timeframe that it takes to do things here.  As such, skimping out on materials to reduce cost, or trusting the supplier who "says" everything they are selling you meets specs, cn cause H-2 segments to collapse and rail supports to crack -- all before completion.

I'd accept they take so long to make sure they "get it right," if they actually got it right even once!
