WARNING-Blazer 45 acp BRASS small primer
« on: November 02, 2012, 10:17:24 AM »
I was just loading a few rounds of 45acp to take to the range today and my press jammed.
I removed a BLAZER case from the machine and discovered that it had a small-size primer pocket which caused the jam.
It was a BRASS case, not aluminum. So it was difficult to spot.
A quick check with calipers confirmed that it was sized for small primers.
A quick search on the net revealed that people discovered this back in 2010, 2 years ago.
Now I have to check all my headstamps.  :wtf:

I am no expert in this matter. But I do know a similar thing occurred back a very long time ago to .38 and .357 cases. Apparently, they used to have large primers. It seems that the standard SAAMI does not specify a large or small primer to be used. So eventually these cases became small primer as the norm.

I read that this is occurring in .45acp due to a difference in primer material causing higher pressures so the move to smaller primers was done to keep the pressures in line with the SAAMI standard. I read that Federal is doing the same thing.
SCIENCE THAT CAN’T BE QUESTIONED IS PROPAGANDA!!!

You also need to look out for the new American Eagle .45ACP. Same thing as the Blazer Brass with small pistol primers.

yea dont reload those small primer 45s. you have to use different powder charges with the smaller primers. save em though to sell on ar15, there are reloaders that buy them.

Estate and Independence 45 is also Small Pistol, that's why we stick to Federal or PMC

I've had a few of those ruin my flow on my progressive...I put small rifle primers on them, and when I have enough done, take the decapping pin out and run them through.

Bought a case federal .45 from ogc and it was small primers...i was at the range when i found out and didrnt want to return it, not enough time. Being pake, reloaded them with target loads, shoots the same as large primer brass. From what i read on the internet, the companys moved to small primers for cost and more environmentaly safe, ie:less lead, smoke, etc...bs

I could be mistaken, but I thought I'd read that the Fed .45 ACP with SPP was supposed to have a "NT" designation on the headstamp.  Actually, I wouldn't mind switching all my .45 brass to SPP.  Would eliminate the need to switch primer mag tubes and pick up tubes when switching from 9/.40 to .45.

Yes lots of manufactures are moving from Large primers to small. So you need to sort them first before priming if you are buying range brass.

i remember you telling me about this awhile back.
right now on multiple sites theres a sale on rws brass being marketed as easy to switch between pistol calibers because it uses small primers. supposed to save time and consolidate inventory. now im actually thinking of going this route so i can spot my brass quicker and stock only small pistol and magnum pistol instead of having to buy 3 kinds. downside is probably less load data?

I'll remember this thread to sort and double check my .45 cases.
