This and their “mandatory reporting for NICS denials and delays” (which is completely broken and full of false positives) will have their illegal gun registry up to snuff in no time.

They also have been using the census bureau to shake down accessory companies (like holster makers) for client lists and customer info.

At first I was upset, but then I remembered that it's 2022 and that if an image exists of the paperwork (fax, printed, email) it's already in a database. Not saying it's not wrong, incompetent, or malicious. Just not surprising. Neither she or the "AFT" care about your privacy.

The problem is, the FFL, not the ATF, has the responsibility to maintain their gun sales records unless and until they go out of business.  Then they are required to forward their records to the ATF.  What the agent was doing was taking photos of paper forms that contain firearm purchase info they are not allowed to have by law.  Until that FFL goes out of business/loses their Fed Firearms License, the data stays with them -- exclusively.

Saying they already have the information makes no logical sense.  If they do, why take pictures?  You're assuming the Feds are competent enough to gather that info outside of asking the FFL to hand it over.  Not a good assumption given the level of incompetence we see in all levels of government these days.

I think every person who ever bought a firearm from that dealer has a civil case against the ATF and that agent personally.  Should sue the living daylights out of them!

The ATF 4473 has all the firearm and customer info the ATF would ever want.  But, if the forms are submitted on paper, the ATF can't easily scan them in.  They need to pay data entry clerks to input the data into any searchable database.

The ATF has been spending decades trying to do just that for all the millions of records they have in storage from out-of-business FFLs.  One of the "safeguards" in the National Firearms Act that protected against a national gun registry was that the records would be created and kept on paper.  No list or database would be available for government to search or collate for non-investigative purposes.  Technology has now caught up with those safeguards, and the ATF is pushing FFLs to submit digital copies of every form, not paper.

I guess if they have time to copy active FFL logbooks, they must have gotten caught up inputting the backlog.

Don't forget new rules for FFL's that they must submit to local PD all denials beginning in Sept 2022.. IDK how HPD is gonna handle this as they have no website to complete this.  IDK if HI is exempt either since it's the police who allow gun purchases from FFL's.
