Shipping Lithium Ion Batteries to Hawaii
« on: August 10, 2022, 12:03:16 PM »
I've tried to order many items from Amazon that were either standalone batteries or products that contain batteries.

The regs on shipping these batteries via air are straightforward.  Yet, Amazon and its sellers summarily restrict shipping these items to Hawaii.  Once in a while I happen upon a listing that will ship here, but it takes time to click on each listing not knowing if anyone will ship here.

I ordered a pair of Bluetooth headphones from Costco this weekend.  They arrived today.  Here's what they did to comply with the "OMG! Lithium Batteries Inside!!" hysterical regs.  Why can't all electronics retailers figure this out?

"Does not ship to Hawaii"  is one of my biggest irritations next to Hawaii politics and liberals.

Seems to be random at times too.  "strange" where vendors on say eBay or other online retailers have zero issues figuring it out.

I've switched over to lithium ion batteries for all my flashlights.
I get them directly from either China or Ebay.

Because Duracells have destroyed many of my best electronic devices.

I think also that this is not enforced as much. I received 12 surefire Lithium batteries from Amazon with my X300. No special stickers on the box.
. Taser is charging $35 for the $24.99 battery. Which means $65. I wonder if they have to charge extra for stickers and packaging. I mean, 1 could just put it in an envelope with a $0.51 stamp.

Yeah, those damn things have destroyed two GPS units, a microcassete recorder, several flashlights, etc.

Duracell should be sued out of existence.

Everready Energizer Ultimate claims to be leakproof, but too late when you find out.

I never trust Duracells.

Energizers usually are OK, but depends where you buy them from.

I am using Eneloop and other NiMH batteries as much as possible, unless the device requires more voltage.

For lithium ion cells, you will not likely be able to buy replacement ones, in the coming years.

So I try to standardize all my stuff to AA or AAA (preferably AA), and able to run on NiMH (1.2 volts per cell).

As for shipping, I sometimes buy from eBay, which ships. Amazon across the board won't touch anything even related to lithium to Hawaii. But of course be careful who you buy from on eBay.

Locally, I have bought from Battery Bills. I still remember their annoying ads from YouTube, haha. But my experience with them varies. Some of the cells I got from them don't seem to be all that good in capacity (new in box, but maybe sat in their inventory for ages).

From my understanding when I tried to get some batteries a while back: If it's already installed in the component, it should be good. If individual cells, there's limitations to the total content of lithium and even how many cells are being transported. For disposable cells like Surefire CR123a batteries, I think the most they could ship was a pack of 2.

Most sellers rather err on the safe side and just restrict sales that places that will go via air.

I find that amazon is probably the best vendor to get them from as long as the site says it ships here is has. I think maybe once I got canceled. EBay vendors either have it set as no ship here and if they didn't they end up mailing you to confirm your address and then so sorry Charlie.
Of course im talking about bigger lifepo4 batteries, 20 amp and up not flashlight batteries. Even the 18650's have given me problems for no reason.
Are there any local retailers that have decent prices?  Im afraid to call battery bill becauae of sticker shock.

I haven't bought CR123s in a while, but interesting that some Amazon vendors will or won't ship depending on Surefire or Streamlight brands.  Or at least I noticed some used to.
