Anyone else turned away from picking up their Permit To Acquire at HPD? (Read 8930 times)

Anyone else turned away from picking up their Permit To Acquire at HPD for any reason that's not their own fault (forgot to bring ID, passport, marriage cert, etc)?

HPD Firearms Department told me today they had a glitch in the application process, and that the state health department didn't get back to them yet; presumably regarding the state of my mental health. Today was my first day to pick up the permit after the arbitrary 14 day wait, and I was told to come back on Wednesday but call ahead in case they don't have it yet.

This board is likely monitored by HPD but I know I'm already on their shitlist. May or may not be related but it sucks. I went home half day today at noon so I can go pick up my permit and the HPD guy left a message while I was on my bike heading there.

They are supposed to issue or deny the permit within 14 days.  I would have raised all kind of shit on that.

That happened to me when I applied for my first long gun permit but this was in Hilo.  The lady blamed it on the same thing though.  Computer glitch with the State health dept.  Since then everything has gone smooth though and every other permit has been available 2 weeks to the day.
It is what it is.

Arlene in Hilo told me that there is only one (1) person doing the health checks for the whole state. While I've never had a permit come in late she always recommends calling first to see if it has come in before hauling it down to Hilo.

Was it denied?  I assume you went on the correct day.  I was there when a guy tried to register for a pistol permit but the officer deneyed him cause he had a pending case for sexual assault in the mainland.

They said I got to call back Wednesday due to the computer glitch. The officer ask if it was my first day for my permit to be picked up after waiting two weeks , so it sounds like a common problem this is a first one for me though. Now my week is mess up I guess it is all worth it when  I finally take home my 1911 operator

Nope not denied, just straight up told to come back some other day because they don't have their shit in order because the whole process is all jacked up in the first place.

Which news station was at the range recently and did the story about female shooters on the rise?
I wonder if they would be willing to do a "follow up" or "next step" segment on the process to ownership while highlighting all these glitches and "needs" for registration and whatnot.
Also doesn't seem to be a isolated incident.

I think you're right, it's basically "shall-issue" for the permit to acquire, is it not?  I don't think they're legally allowed to make you wait longer than two weeks if they don't have any reason to deny it.

Sorry, it says the permit shall be issued or denied by the twentieth day, and no permit shall be be issued sooner than 14 calendar days.  Naturally, the statute includes lots of "thou shalls" for us peons, and plenty of "you may if you feel like it" for our glorious Peoples' Overlords(tm).

I stand corrected  :worship:, as I didn't really memorize that one section.  My same theory would apply if it was day 20 though :P.

I had called ahead so it was no big deal.  She told me to call again in a couple of days.  I understand that we all want them to adhere to the 14 days but I am happy that they won't issue until they are done checking.  this might help weed out some of the crazies that should not have firearms to begin with.  IMO.
It is what it is.

I was mistaken, too.  I was pretty sure it was shall-issue after fourteen days, so I was apologizing to Dregs for spreading bad intel.  I love this state.  If HPD wanted to be dicks about it, they could give you a one-day window to pick up and use your permit.  Can't pick up till the 20th day, and it's shredded the next day if you don't.  What a wonderful state.  I thoroughly enjoy living in this state.

Oh yeah no probs thanks for input as always.

As someone who was raised here in Hawaii, I thoroughly love living here too. My reasons are not limited to just the wonderful firearms situation, either. I love living so close to other people I can hear them watching TV, or to mentally take sides when the neighbors are arguing. Let's not forget my patriotic love of overpaying for every single item that comes through our port. Mercifully, the wife is born and raised here and has no desire to ever voluntarily leave the fucking islands, so I will never have to even consider the terrible idea of leaving against my will!
