Q: 1, 2 or 3 point slings for a HD pump shotgun? or none?
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:04:05 PM »
I'm trying to figure out what type of sling works best for a HD pump shotgun -- one point, two point or three point sling?  Or none?

I am reading that single point slings makes the SG move around a lot and possibly whack you on the knee or privates.  However, the advantages of the single point sling seems to be that it allows you hold the shotgun on either side and manipulate the SG easier, when doing reloads for example.

Two point slings seems to keep the SG more stable but is not as easy to handle.  And I understand it's not possible to hold the shotgun on the other side.

Three point slings seem to keep the SG from flopping like a single point, without being as restrictive as a two point sling.

But I don't really know. -- any expert advice or opinions on this?  Would you even want to put a sling on a HD shotgun?

Thanks!

I just switched to a two point on my rifle.  I made it myself, but it's a shameless ripoff of the Viking Tactical VTAC sling.  I like it because it adjusts quickly and easily, doesn't have a bunch of extra BS to tangle up in like a three point, and doesn't let the gun flop around like a carp.  I'd go with a two-point quick adjust.

No sling on my HD shotty. I decided that in the heat of the moment I don't want an extra thing getting in my way or potentially getting snagged on something.

If you really want a sling on it then I would go with a 2-point. Like cougar said doesn't let the gun flop around like a 1-point and less stuff to get tangled in than a 3-point.

If your home covers an acre or more, or you plan to climb out windows or into your guard tower, want to transition to your handgun because your shotgun ran dry,  or just want to look cool when the JWs are at the door, then get a 3 point sling. More points are better in most games.

Slings are useful accessories, but a home defense shotgun should be kept simple.

+1.  A home defense shotgun with a sling will most likely get in the way.

Thanks for the feedback on this... sling-less it shall remain.  :)

If you do get a sling I do NOT recommend a 3-point for a pump shotty.  Had one on mine and I think I still have the three point and all the extra friggin webbing gets in the way of the pumping action...just my $0.02.

I agree!  Vtac slings are really great 2 point slings, I have them on my rifles as well.

In sooth.  That's why Pele invented quick-detachable swivels (Attachment 1.)  See, when venturing afield, you hook up the sling.  When used around the house, you don't.  The weird funky-looking piece of metal is what I threw together from scraps just to temporarily try out the concept of a slung shotgun... forty years ago.  Worked well, so I never bothered to "improve" upon it.

The whole rig with an extra barrel is Attachment 2, my full-choke 30" waterfowling barrrel, and (mounted on the gun), my upland / defense barrel with a Polychoke.  One of these days I plan on getting a slug-rifled barrel with sights.  Then I'd really be tacticool.  Slug shells shown.

Oh, the "miles" and "gallons" this old Mossberg has seen. I named it "Irving."

Frankly, this old-timer got so used to handling a two-point sling for so many decades, that I don't think I can handle anything else.  Old dog, old tricks. So I can't recommend anything else.  So go with the majority.

For HD get a single point with a hook or qd.  Weapon retention is the idea.  2 and 3 point slings could get in the way of the slide on a pump.
