Enjoy the short line while it lasts.  Imagine what it'll look like when all gun owners have to register their guns every year.

You'd think that after having people coming to the firearms section nonstop every single day from opening to closing and turning away a lot of people an hour before clsoing, they would try to service more than one person at a time or increase the hours.  But hey, that's Hawaii.  Make it as inconvenient as possible to discourage ownership.

What sucks is that I took off from work, lugged my firearm around, plunked my two quarters in the meter and walked to the office only to find that they were closed. HPD expects compliance with the time limitations imposed on registering firearms once the permit is issue but arbitrarily shuts down operations without prior notification. What the hell are we supposed to do: check for their twitter feeds on when they have declared 3:30 the quitting time?

It's understandable that HPD can lock the double glass doors at 3:30 p.m. if there's a long line. However, the doors should remain open if the line does not extend past the double glass doors, allowing more people to register their guns or apply/pick up permits. Shutting the doors at 3:30 p.m. daily, regardless of the length of the line, is another unfair, blanket policy that's designed to benefit only HPD. If the line was shorter, why not stay open and continue to serve people? It's another reason to believe the stereotypical negative work ethic of government employees.

This is not a knock to the hard-working officers who are serving the gun buyers. Their bosses should look at the system and find more ways to improve things. One simple change is to open at 7:30 a.m. instead of 7:45 p.m. But, I guess working 15 minutes earlier is asking for too much.

Here's a suggestion: lock the doors at 3:30 and tell everyone inside that HPD will process all of the registrants inside for sure. If all of the registrants inside have been process before 4 or 4:15 as the case may be in the normal situation, HPD should process more applicants until 4 (or 4:15). The registrants outside of the door when the doors are locked can then decide whether to take a chance and remain in line in hopes of being serviced.

i guess it really is hit and miss on the times and days which there are short lines.  I still can't believe how short the lines were yesterday.

Yup!  Most people just wanna get outta there!  Kinda don't wanna rub the LEO's the wrong way and question them even though they are very respectful to everyone!

I was there last week and a guy couldn't see to read the registration, had to ask someone else to read it for him.... Another guy said let me know when you go to the range so I'm not there.... Entire room was laughing even the officers....

Exactly what I was saying 20 pages ago. Once the lines start to die down again hpd will return to the routine way of handling registration, as seen by the other member. Let's see if they will still come out and see if anyone is picking up permits, ok with late registration, etc, etc.

We all know in our gut that HPD will not make any documented policy changes after the rush dies down. After all, why do they want to make it more easier for law abiding citizens to get firearms? They want the process to be difficult to discourage new people from getting into the sport.

But, we all hope to be pleasantly surprised with some new positive changes. A good one is to at least allow registrations at other police stations. Let's hope for the best on this.

It's not as manual as you think. It's get entered into a database which they can do at other stations and send the hard copy to records at the main station. It's not HPDs fault. It's the policy makers that have the final decision if they are going to allow it at other stations. Also they have to increase personnel at those stations to accommodate the increased workload and find funding for those positions. I'm in no way defending HPD, I'm just giving the bigger picture so people will stop blaming the wrong people. Go do a protest in front of the mayors office. He can get the ball rolling faster.
