Registration side was pretty empty when I got there a little after 10. Had a few out of state folks registering or waiting inside the room, but no line other than that.

Got clarification on process for inheriting on the permit side. Found I needed one more document on the estate side. Confirmed my dad’s handguns were registered to him, which will be needed. I was worried there were a couple of older ones that he might not have registered. The long guns all good.

Parking at HPD was pretty empty when I got there too. It was full when I left a little after 11, so assume that was those coming in to take care of stuff on their lunch break.

Got here around 7:40. Maybe 6th in line. Applying for permit, so in “regular” side. Sign on “other” side says only picking up permits today. So waiting in longer line.

ETA - Lady came out to say “it will be one sided for a while”.

Just registering today, only 4 in line when the doors opened. Out in less than an hour.

Side note: I think a new officer was “trying” to help today. Guy was registering his G19X, was next to get into the room, new officer asked him to take out the pistol for inspection. Guy took out the case, set it down, officer opened the case. Pistol slide was in battery, but mag out, so I kept my eyes on the muzzle. I give the officer credit for “trying” to help and he only handled it by the grip, but he flagged me with the muzzle...twice.

Never been in that situation before, so not sure of a proper response, if any. I know what my normal range response would be, but given the situation, just looked after myself and those behind me, thankfully no one. Thoughts?

Always a good idea to politely instill good gun safety and handling pointers, especially to new shooters who may not know better.

Guess it could never hurt, mind you it was the OFFICER who flagged me with the registrant’s gun

Four paperwork side. At least it’s open this time. Last time I came, was closed.

At 11:35, no one in line on the paperwork side.  Then walked over to the registration side, saw only one guy at the window, also no line by the door.

Picked up my permit at 1130 nobody in line and took 3 minutes. Came back at 1230 to register nobody in line and took 9 minutes. 4 open parking stalls both times.

Registering no one in line no one in the room. Both sides are open PTA applications at the Special Duty section.

In and out in 30 min that’s what I get for maxing the parking meter.

The permit applications are now across the way from the registration window.  However, sometimes they close it, if they are not busy.  At that point you go back to the old way of going to the registration window.

Note that firearms are not allowed in the permit side (Special Duty or Diamond Head side) near the snack shop.  So need to plan accordingly.

7:15am got to parking, >5 stalls open, just waiting to put money in meter at 7:30am. Free parking until then! 😑

Applied for long gun permit and 1 pistol permit, paid rap back and did fringerprinting, in and out in 20 min. Let a couple guys go in before me since they were just picking up permits.

FYI i got called back because they needed a copy of the pistol's registration because it is registered in Maui.  Thankfully they were able to take a picture of it from the picture of it I had on my phone.

Thanks for the help folks :geekdanc:

Haven't had to register a firearm for years. I recently applied for a permit to acquire two pistols I had just purchased and also had to register a lower. It was like a ghost town! No lines! And since they split the lines, one side for paperwork and one side strictly for registering hardware, it was super fast. I like this new setup...
