Drove by around 5:45 am and there were about 12-15 guys lined up.  They looked all bundled up.

If you're thinking that, then the anti-gun government is winning ...
When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state".

So if someone bought a rifle at show on Saturday, stood in line a couple times this week during their lunch hour, but couldn't get finished before lunch ended, and finally took Friday off from work to register the purchase, they broke the law?  It's five days, not five working days?

At DMV people can register cars for folks if all the required paperwork is done.  Could someone who had jumped through all the hoops (permit to acquire long gun, etc) and only had to do the final registration process have another person register the gun for them- If that person was also "allowed" to poses the rifle?  Maybe there's something that requires another signature on the last day, and that form can't be signed in advance?

If this could happen, I'm sure I woulda seen something about it here on site in the last couple months that I've been following all this...but I had to ask.

Not guaranteed but HPD guys usually don't bust you for being a day or two late especially with lines being the way they are.  I have gone in at 5 working days to register and they didn't make an issue of it.  That being said, just as you are not allowed to speed just because you are late for work, you are not allowed to be delinquent on registration because you were at work...technically speaking.  I am pretty sure you can't have someone else register a fire arm of except the owner.

It's 5 calendar days and yes, registering after that is technically breaking the law. That's not to trivialize it, only pointing out that they don't press the matter if you're making a good faith effort to abide with the law. Many of us have been late and I know a few who are habitual "offenders", but I've never heard of anyone being penalized/prosecuted for it. The peope in the Firearms Division are pretty understanding and it's probably more important to them that people complete the process.

*Do not have someone else register it, because if you bought it from a dealer, the paperwork won't match up and you'll have a problem.

They (not hpd) want you to be late, they want you to break the law, they want you to be discouraged to buy and sell firearms.  They make every effort possible to make exercising your RIGHTS a very unpleasant and costly experience.  This is why we all must remain vigilant in our efforts to fight this.

Every time you have to wait in the line, remember it come election time!
