Anyone actually use bluetooth with their phone?
« on: November 09, 2012, 11:45:11 AM »
So my son decided to give me his over used iPhone. Took me a week or two to figure out how exactly it all works, but its pretty great. I gave up my old samsung flip phone for it, but the headset i use while on the road does not work. In my search for a new headset my son mentioned bluetooth....so im here asking. Ive seen a few of you out there with these things in your ears...are they worth it? Do they work good? easy to use? I noticed they have speaker phones as well, i have been eyeing this Jabra Cruiser speakerphone, just wanted some advice before i bought something i know nearly nothing about!

I have iPhone and I use the BlueTooth connection feature in my car.  I've never tried the ear piece ones.  A few friends have the ones where you put the speaker in the visor.  Those seem to work well.

I used some rental cars with bluetooth connections to my iPhone. Those were amazing.

I found that bluetooth car speakers pick up too much road noise.

The headset by Blue Parrot is awesome if you do not mind the odd looks as it has an ear cup and the mic extends to your mouth.  It works like you are using your phone and not a bluetooth headset (very clear) and the battery lasts all day.  I had this for at least 3 years.

I now use a Blueant Q2 ear piece and I like it.  The battery only lasts 1/2 a day (I use my phone alot) and the clarity is good unlike other noise canceling headsets.  It is only around $50 on Amazon.

I have the bluetooth device clipped to my visor in my company truck. It works very well. Only two drawbacks I have found. I have to speak up a bit and I find myself looking up towards the device when driving. And the battery life of the phone is diminished greatly when you use and leave the bluetooth option turned on on your phone.

I've worked got 6 years in cell phone management, got tons of free Bluetooth and hated them all.  The clearest ones are the ones that are worked and plug into thrs headphone jack.

I have the Cruiser; I have the Jawbone ERA as well, which is quite awesome.   The cruiser was not bad, and I liked it. it because it was sufficiently loud enough for me to hear.  I have not had complaints from my wife, and she was able to hear me during our conversations.

I'm moving in the opposite direction. After it came out that the alphabet agencies can track all your calls and internet activity without a warrant I'm more interested in technology that doesn't cost a lot and has fewer features. They can still track me but the harder the work the faster I can bankrupt their system. Oh yeah PREPAID all the way.

I'd go with the visor unit, hands down.  I've got a Motorola one that's getting old now, but when it goes belly up I'm getting another one.  Two reasons: number one, when I have an earpiece in for a while, it starts to get uncomfortable.  On a long trip it can be downright painful.  Perhaps I have weird ears, but my dad got a Bluetooth earpiece for Christmas and had the same complaint.  The visor mounted ones don't shift around in your ears, they don't get earwax built up on them, and they're always in the same place when a call comes in--namely, the visor as opposed to in the ashtray, in the center console, on the passenger floorboard, your nightstand, you get the idea.  Second point: Bluetooth should be left in the car.  I know I may take some heat for this, but in this man's humble opinion, you look like a crazy person walking around talking to yourself in a semi-raised voice if people can't see your Bluetooth.  If they can see your earpiece, you look like a self-important D-bag.  "Cougar, baby, I'm a real busy important person.  Everything I do has got to be efffffffficient, ya know what I mean, babe?  See, I've got to be able to take a call at any moment, but I can't just drop what I'm doing here in the mall!  No, no, no, my shopping is important, my telephone business is important, and yeah, I got my share of greenbacks.  Made some smart investments in the day trading game, now I drive a Bentley and I've got blue flashing LEDs in my ears."  (Basically what I'm trying to say is that whenever I see someone with a Bluetooth crammed into their ear walking around town, I automatically assume they have the personality of that standard-issue 80's investment banker in movies, the one who refers to everyone as "babe", cheats on his fiance constantly, and ends up getting his nose broken in the final fifteen minutes of the film.)
I'm just a fluffy white bunny rabbit who lost his way.

The question is WHY should they track an individual like yourself.  Can you imagine the amount of data going through one base station?

The trick is you gotta have enough activity that makes them look you up every once in a while and then they realize you are cool. Then you put something else out there and they follow you a little more and realize you are not a threat and they are wasting their time. If everybody did it enough then one would hope Congress or somebody would wake up and say "Hey what are we guys paying you for?" and their budgets would get cut. Either that or I'll end up being the most annoying prisoner in a FEMA camp.

Use these a lot, but carefully:
