It's unknown what Mark's true occupation is and what he was doing in A-stan.  The WH says he is a civil engineer and retired Navy diver and was doing contract work (assume civil engineering stuff).

He was traded for a guy who owned poppy fields that was supplying revenue to the Taliban and was high on the world "kill list".  Who also has been incarcerated for 17 years.

I remember being in the Philippines under Martial law.
