Mauna Loa is not erupting and there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time. “However, Mauna Loa continues to be in a state of heightened unrest as indicated by increased earthquake activity and inflation of the summit,” USGS said in Friday’s daily update on the volcano. “The unrest is likely caused by renewed input of magma into Mauna Loa’s summit reservoir system.”

Just a rumbling sound in Kona, but more prolonged than usual.

HVO site shows seven quakes happened in succession.

Just before 0925 or so.

There’s no eruption nor is one imminent. However it will not be surprising if it did erupt since volcanic eruptions happen during/after heightened seismic activity, but that doesn’t mean that heightened activity with no eruption over the past decades is just wash.

In other words, those living on the big island should continue as normal but should also be prepared in the event it does erupt. Things can change on a short notice, after all.

Knocked tools off my bench.
I was doing a brake job and the unbolted pads
fell off.
We shook quite a bit.
I'm Hamakua side quite a few miles away.
 :wtf:
Hey it's the BI we expect destruction.
Be it laws from Oahu or Nature.

I live 10 miles from the Volcano National Park entrance on the Hilo side and never felt it.
I didn’t know there was an earthquake until my friend on Oahu texted me to see how we were.

World's Largest Active Volcano Erupting
For First Time In Nearly 40 Years

Quote
Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, is erupting for the first time in nearly 40 years,
which has caused an ashfall advisory to be issued for Hawaii's Big Island until 6:00 a.m. local
time (11:00 a.m. ET) on Monday (November 28), state officials reported.

The eruption began at around 11:30 p.m. HST on Sunday (November 27) in Moku‘āweoweo,
the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, according to the United States Geological Survey, which
noted that it was not believed to be threatening to communities located downhill.

The Hawai'i Tourism Authority said it was "closely monitoring" the eruption, also noting that the
eruption wasn't believed to threaten nearby communities.

I want to make a trip there just to see it. Love that Mordor vibe.

Daytime Maunaloa sure looks a lot different.  Like nothing going on. This is taken from the same spot I took the night picture.  Both at 5x optical zoom.

How's the air quality situation?  Hazy?

I was in the Mountain View area when Kilauea was going off a few years ago.  I was staying at KMC the day of the bigger quake that closed the camp.  I was lucky that I went to the visitor center the night before.  That was a sight to see in person.  Can't imagine what it would be like to see the fans of lava in the air live.  Coverage from HNN showed some of that.

Anecdotally.
I interviewed  for a job at the Mauna Loa solar observatory, they hired a younger guy,
brawn over brains I suppose.  Observatory director was pissed.  University of Colorado.
hire a Local mix kid over a white guy with ten year observatory experience..
The gate password was 1234.
That road is now cut.
Lots of people will try to see the fireworks.
I'll stay away.
I know a back way in. but I'll stay at home for now,
Best stay away till the Lava flows get established.
People don't seem to realize that lava is liquid rock.

Lava describes both the molten rock AND the solidified, cooled molten rock.

So, it's a dual-meaning word.

Since last night I cannot even see any glow or even a lighted sky at night.  The fissure on my side of the mountain apparently shutdown and the flow is now on the opposite side of me, heading to the Saddle Road.  The state and a lot of people are concerned if it gets cut off.  I would immediately have gotten some D9s over there and build some berms to protect the highway.  All they gotta do is rip up the old lava fields and they will have all the material they need.
