You have to look at this situation from the viewpoint of the criminals in charge. This is a perfect reason to delay the issuing of CCW permits indefinitely.  No range to test so no permits.  This will also affect those who didn't yet get an affidavit that they passed the handgun course which requires live fire.

Shuttering Kokohead is the canary in the coal mine.
if they can shut down an outdoor range they can do it to indoor ranges. They can impose a health placard like they do with food establishments...but hey at least we still can buy firearms...Pew Pew.
Heck why would they stop there...military ranges too.

How do the ranges on mainland handle lead exposure.  Do they do routine maintenance???  I’d like to see the range cleaned then really upgraded to lower exposure risk for all.  Just burying the problem doesn’t seem to be a good fix.  Even if the range closes for an extended period it would be worth the wait for an improved facility.

Lead poisoning is a real thing.  It's fortunate they caught it before OSHA got involved which would delay things even more and cost more.

Part of the blame is lack of range maintenance and renovations, but most is due to policy and practices.

Do we think that the City will open it back up? The berm remediation has been halted again - indef.

My personal thoughts are no, they will stall it as long as they can, and I think threats of lawsuits and public outcry is the only way to get them to get off their a$$'s.

If they close the range permanently, you know they will open it again as a park, tourist attraction, etc.

Open or closed, they still have to solve the current lead problems.

How many pounds of lead does it take to become a problem?

My backyard range has a backstop consisting of tree branches,  logs and brush about 15 ft. deep.  Since I am the only one that shoots here, I doubt it has more than 150 lbs of lead.

City can't close the range cause the city will be required to clean the lead up, truck all the contaminated dirt away for processing.  Cheaper to renovate and keep it open than close it down.

You should have a dirt berm.  Theres still the possibility of ricochets or bullets going through logs and stuff, tho it's probably very small.  MM16 range is just lava cinders for the ground cover and backstops.  I hear ricochets zipping around all the time there, probably a safety issue I should bring up with the DLNR.

It becomes an issue when you shoot at one place in the dirt berm constantly and it becomes a huge metal mass in the dirt that bullets ricochet off and creates more lead dust.  If you have fixed firing positions and target stands, then that mass will accumulate faster.  If you shoot at different places on the berm all the time, then it's spread out and not a problem.  Check for that bullet mass in the berm.  Bullets should be shot into dirt, not into the other bullets.

Lets say each lane at Koko Head gets 200 9mm rounds per weekend day, and plus 50 per weekday, so 550 rounds per week.  or 9lbs of bullets.  About 500lbs per lane per year.  I dunno how often the lead is removed, but should probably be done annually.  I've heard stories of indoor rubber trap ranges that have lead and ricochet problems and have a ton of lead per lane.

Back in the day Mayor Fasi wanted to close KHSC and move the zoo to Koko Head crater.

The community in East Honolulu made it clear that they did not want the zoo in their back yard.

That was the end of his plans..

One of the old timers told me that there is an agreement between the estate that donated

the property and the city that the property must be used as a range or the city will lose the

property. I hope this agreement is valid.

Given the lack of integrity among politicians, we can expect all sorts of dirty deals and skull doggery.

Any possible business opportunity will never be overlooked. Just look at the proposed facilities to replace

Aloha Stadium.

I don't have dirt on my property.  Like most properties in Puna, the ground is very rocky.  That is why I built my backstop with tree debris.  I feel confident it will easily stop even a 300 Win Mag, based on my experience shooting trees on Molokai with one.

Thanks for your detailed analysis of bullet weight.  It made me realize I have less than 50 lbs of lead in my backstop.
