what training or tests did you perform to get your firearms? The claim that you found a complete cartridge as a ricochet on the Kokohead trail makes me wonder if you have any type of firearms education.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Cartridge ricochet doesn't make much sense. In Hawaii it was just a test online. A hunter safety course was needed for a hunting license where I used to live. Military training should also qualify.

Are you even aware that 26 states have Constitutional carry, and NONE of them require training or permits in order to exercise the right to keep and bear arms?

The hunter safety course here which qualifies for owning handguns is ridiculous.  The course doesn't teach handgun safety any more than watching a few good quality YT videos can.  It would make MORE SENSE to do away with the training requirement for handgun permits since (1) Hunter's Ed has no range/live fire portion to actually teach handgun operation and safety, and (2) no training is needed to own and use a long gun.

Makes no sense from a safety standpoint.  Might as well use the lowest common denominator -- no mandated training at all for ANY firearm purchases.

While I agree that a hunter safety course is not adequate. It's better than nothing and at least it teaches people to treat every weapon as loaded and that firearms and alcohol are not a good combination. It should be better but it is better than nothing. The problem with just letting anyone carry however they like is that some are just plainly not competent to make rational decisions with or without a firearm. If they had competence they would realize that they need training and obtain it voluntarily in order to protect their family and others from the danger of owning firearms without proper training.

Alternatively we could just punish people after their fact for allowing children access to a firearm that resulted in death.

NO! I say lets make the training adequate. Let the people have at least the same training as HPD. Also make it a requirement to continue to qualify to keep it.

Who pays for this mythical training?  The tax payers?  The gun owners, many of whom most in need of protection can't afford it?
