Is Hawaii Crime being Mis-categorized?
« on: November 15, 2022, 11:05:37 AM »
I get a Safety Report from Ring every week.

They categorize the included police reports as "Crime," "Safety" and "Animal."

Under "Crime," they have "Violent" and "Non-Violent."

Examples of Crimes reported:

- Arrest: Assault, Family
- Assault 2
- Terroristic Threatening
- Bank Robbery: Man passed a note to teller demanding money

The first 3 are in the category "Non-violent."

The man passing a note to a bank teller and leaving with the loot was classified "Violent."

So, in Hawaii, ASSAULT is NON-VIOLENT, but a note passed to a bank teller is VIOLENT.

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Probably because "assault" doesn't necessarily mean there was a medium of physical exchange, whereas "robbery" is considered a violent crime in terms of UCR and "theft" is not.

IIRC assault 2 is no longer a conviction where you lose your 2a right in HI. Thanks to HIFICO.

I never witnessed or heard of 2nd hand cops miscategorizing charges, but I assume it happens and not because of human error, but because I have experience with cops trying not to make a police report.  As in trying to persuade the victim to not file one.

I'll get flamed fro this but you are correct.
Main reason is they don't want to "Bust" a cousin, or uncle.
Some people say Hawaiians aren't tribal, but they sure act like it.

Banks are important

You and me not so much
If you dissolve your enemies in acid, technically that's turning your problems into a solution.

3rd circuit Range vs. Garland made a ruling. They upheld banning non-violent felons from possessing guns. And used the reasoning that blacks, native americans, and  servants were not allowed to own guns in the colonial days.

I would second your observation but I think the main reason is usually just laziness. They don't want to type and investigate.
