Moving to Hawaii soon. What guns should I get before moving?
« on: December 26, 2022, 03:10:16 PM »
Hi there new to forum.

I live in a free state now on the mainland, but moving to Hawaii soon. For you local gun lovers, if you were in my position what guns would you get before moving, as the process of bringing in guns is much easier than purchasing them in Hawaii. In addition, add in what guns are just difficult to get in Hawaii compared to the mainland.

Some guns on my potential list:
Sig P226 MK25
HK VP9
Beretta 1301 Tactical
Benelli M4
CZ SP-01 Tactical
Mossberg 590a1

Not sure if the guns above are easy to get in Hawaii.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

All that u can afford.  U must wait 2 weeks and get approval from the police to buy anything. And more hoops as well.

Any handguns on that list that come with >10 round magazines give the liberals here sweat soaked nightmares.
Take those mags apart and store them as parts for future use.  Get 10 round mag versions for use here.

Didn't have the ability to type a lot so now I do.

1) How long will you live here for?

All guns in HI must be registered with the police (HPD). There is no way to un-register them if you leave the state. Also u have X days to notify HPD if you are "permanently" leaving the state by which guns are leaving.

With the above being said, I would only bring the minimal amount of guns needed if you will be here for less than 5 years. And securely store the rest on the mainland.

2) Another benefit to buying the guns on the mainland is for handguns to be purchased in HI, you have to take a Hawaii handgun safety class.  Then add in the 2 week wait per handgun that I mentioned above.  So if you can afford them, buy them on the mainland.  Unless you're coming from CA that has a handgun registry and those you want are not on the approved list.  What also ties in is #1 and how long u gonna be here.

Guns in HI are typically more expensive than on the mainland.  And selection isn't usually as good.  VP9 should be on the shelf here, but the others may not.  It's hit or miss, but stores can special order.

There is no class required for a rifle (long gun) or shotgun.  But you still need a permit to buy them from HPD.  Unlike handguns that are serial number specific, the long gun/shotgun permits to buy are good for 1 year. But you still have to register them.

Definitely google HRS134 and read most of it.  It's in legalese, so for me, I had to read each sentence like 5 times to understand it.  You can also check out the legal section if you have questions or any other section on this forum.

Appreciate the post.  I'll be moving to Hawaii for good, and thankfully not coming from CA.

Yeah i had to definitely take some time reading the laws there a while back, I will def need to refresh myself.  But I do know that it's much easier to bring in guns than to buy them there.  And i did not know about the gun class.  Yikes.

Let me ask you, if you were in my situation, what would you buy before moving to Hawaii, knowing what Hawaii has and the prices there?

Sig
Barretta
Cz
Hk

If u dont want to take the handgun safety class thats good for life.

Idk much abt the sig, but ive seen the other 3 on she shelf.

Buy as many as u can afford. Mags and ammo u can always get later and have no 2 week wait.

are you moving to Hawaii, the Big Island?  or Oahu, Hawaii.

if you're active-duty military (or DoD), you can shoot your Barrett 50 at Schofield.  ;D
although I'm sure there's some space on the BI for a 50.

Might need to befriend someone with a private range... haha
