Actually, it was getting to the point where more and more holidays were infringing on businesses trying to remain production -- too many paid days off for employees for no reason other than it's on the calendar.

It's the reason George and Abe lost their holidays celebrating their birthdays, and a single holiday was created to honor all former Presidents.  The powers that be needed to make room for the MLK holiday.

Funny how, as you said, few businesses observe MLK's birthday as an actual holiday.  MLK got his day, and businesses got to reduce two paid holidays down to one.

With exception of Christmas, Holidays dedicated to a man is a political stunt  to get votes from a constituency.  Pure and simple.

The word "holiday" literally derived from "Holy Day."  All holidays were based on religious events:  Christmas, Easter, Palm Sunday, Passover, etc.

So, yeah, all the other long weekends are for political reasons.  Makes the person declaring a holiday feel good, and it might buy votes from the people getting an extra day off from work.
