Glock Perfection (my G19 gen5 and its' journey)
« on: February 12, 2023, 04:44:45 PM »

rather short journey.  I've only had it for maybe 3 years or nearly 3 years. it will be one of my carry pistols, along with my Sig P365
when I started getting more heavily into firearms about 12 years ago, I didn't really like the Glock brand. I thought they were too average, too pain jane, nothing special
but a few years ago a friend talked me into getting a G19. if SHTF, this would be a great sidearm.  9mm, common handgun, ammo and spare parts would be plentiful. sounded like good reasoning. I planned to just keep it stock. no need to mod it, just keep it reliable. but I did add the Holosun optic and Trijicon suppressor height night sights and Streamlight TLR7A light. now recently, I thought maybe I can make it better with some reliable mods. I added the Apex trigger and Strike Industries extended mag release. I can tell right away that the mag release works better than stock. easier to eject the mags with less effort.  the Strike Industries one is a polymer body with a aluminum face, polymer body may be better to contact the polymer mags instead of aluminum body like other aftermarket mag release ones. comes with 2 aluminum faces. 1 is slightly larger. i went with the smaller one bc I was worried the larger one might contact my kydex holster. the smaller one works great and does not contact my holster.
I was going to add a magwell and extended slide stop. but the magwell won't work with 10 round mags, and the slide stop will contact my holster, so I'll pass on those. plus those are mods I can do without, not so important
the Apex trigger is 4 lbs 13 oz whereas the stock one is 5 lbs 8 oz, . still has some grittyness with the takeup, but i think it will get better after I shoot it more. but the reset is shorter and better. trigger has a crisper break and crisper reset. so overall, it is better than the stock one

I changed my mind about the Glock brand.  I like it now bc they are reliable, has a lot of aftermarket parts, holsters, lights, etc. they aren't the balls best of pistols, but for the money they are hard to beat. I enjoy modifying things like cars, guns, so Glock has that appeal to me.

Just hope that if you should have to use it, that some ambitious DA does not try to paint you as premeditated killer.

After all, why would someone do all those modifications if not tuning it, planning on killing someone?

Have heard similar arguments about using handloads for self defense.

This is not Texas or Arizona.

DA could make the same arguement if you use a Shadow Systems pistol which is a Glock with upgraded parts
Or a Staccato, Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom, etc
Why would you need a $5k pistol for SD? You must be a murderer  ;)

Smyth Busters: Is It OK To Modify Your Carry Gun?

Quote
What counts as a modification? Changing the factory "iron" sights to fiber optic or Tritium night sights? Sights have no material effect on how the gun functions. What about a trigger job? If you have not altered a safety function of the firearm, a trigger upgrade probably isn't going to work against you. For an extra measure of CYA in court JIC, have a professional gunsmith do the trigger job for you. Or use a drop-in kit like those from Apex Tactical.

Modifications that HAVE been brought up at trial are cosmetic changes to how the gun LOOKS. Clever sayings on the inside of an AR-15's ejection port cover or laser-engraving "Smile, wait for flash!" on the muzzle of your pistol is not a good idea. Even painting the gun a different color can be brought up by an overzealous prosecutor. These are all things the jury member who doesn't understand guns can SEE. Don't make it appear to them you were "looking for a fight."

In the end, Steve and Caleb could not find a court case where the outcome went against somebody because the firearm they used in self-defense had been modified. So based on their research, the myth is BUSTED. A self-defense gun can be modified, within reason.

Judge rules the dustcover that reads "you're fucked" is inadmissible
Though that cop was definitely one of those thugs looking to blow someone away with his toy.

overwatch magwell i didn't like.  front of factory mag would be touching the magwell.  it worked ok, but had to kind of push it in more firmly than usual.  i just didn't like the mag touching the magwell.
so I took it off

something bothered me about the Apex trigger.  the one on my 47 is great, I like it a lot
but in the 19 when i would try to slowly let out the trigger after firing, it would have this double click reset
it shoots fine shooting normally but when i would go for a slow reset it would double click.  it worked fine, but I just didn't like that double reset
so, I used the factory connector with the rest the Apex trigger and it went back to the normal single click reset, but the take up and reset was like factory, not shorter as with the Apex trigger and connector
so, I figure something is up with the Apex connector
I went ahead and ordered a Ghost Edge 3.5lb connector  https://ghostinc.com/ghost-edge-3-5-gen-1-5/
now, it has the single click reset, and it is crisper break and reset, with zero initial take up.  I think the Apex trigger with the Ghost Edge connector its better than just the Apex trigger alone
its not much lighter but the take up and reset are short and crisp
I think the Ghost connector makes the biggest difference in the trigger, as far as the take up and reset and slightly lighter
add the Apex trigger and I get a better feeling flat trigger face that is wider, the safety blade feels better to me, and it gets slightly lighter even
I think if you want a better trigger but dont want to spend too much, just get the Ghost Edge trigger connector
