There are laws against trespassing if on private property or in public spaces after they close for the night.

There are also laws to protect animals from inhumane and cruel treatment.

There are laws that require a license and permit to hunt and kill game animals.

If the cops are disinterested because the birds are an invasive species, why not use night vision and record the inhumane killing.  Show that to the Cops.  invasive or not, it doesn't give anyone a free pass to use illegal means.

They don't have to identify the suspects.  Find where they parked and record their vehicles.  Monitor that parking location, and call the Cops immediately.  If they are caught in the act, no problem identifying them.

Might also contact the Humane Society and any other animal rights groups for assistance.  The more people involved, the harder it becomes to continue.

Maybe someone also needs to organize a better solution, like trapping these critters for placement as pets or humane euthanasia.

Just saying.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Surveillance cameras like Ring and trail cameras have IR LEDs for night vision.  No need to get all tactical,   :geekdanc:  :shaka:

Garand Thumb made the good point IMHO, that when the balloon goes up, if you don't have NV, you're just going to be a "loot drop" for somebody else.

does that apply to Hawaii too?  or is that mainland-only rules?  :(

If the birds are causing a 10% loss to farmers and spread disease like the article says, I see nothing wrong with trying to eradicate them. The ones doing it seem like responsible people as they are picking up and bagging the dead birds.

They have rules about shooting chickens.
I don’t see them targeting feral cats when we have all the cat problems,"
Cuz we scatter into the shadows so you can’t identify us, when you approach.
And let's not forget the mongeese 's !

The feral cat problem is not related to the discussion.

There are indeed sick people who abuse those cats.  Recently in Mililani Mauka, someone reported several cats shot with arrows.  Also, there are organized efforts to control their numbers, like the Humane Society offering free spay/neuter, vaccines, and micro-chipping for feral cats brought to them.  If you need cages to catch them, they offer those for rent.  I've taken care of free roaming cats using that program, and i know some people who help entire feral cat colonies to make sure they are healthy, fed and not reproducing.

Regardless of the problems they may cause, feral cats are not an invasive species.  Comparing that to the parakeet problem is "apples to oranges."  if you report someone killing feral cats, the Cops won't ignore you -- as much.

My wife volunteers for a BI outfit tthat does  spay, neutering and microchipping.  She also feeds a local feral colony.  They put a lot of time and money into taking care of the little ones.

I live with four feral born indoor cats, and two more as outside cats.  They all help keep me somewhat sane.   I like them far more than most humans.

Oh yeah, the outside cats adopted us, rather cool that.

Flashlights?  I have shined high power flashlight on doves roosting in a tree at night and they wouldn't even move. I then got a green.laser pointer and shined it directly in their eye and they still didn't move.
