Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but didn’t find anything.  With KHSC (hopefully) set to reopen soon, I’m wondering if it’s bad form to shoot comped rifles?

It’s probably been 6+ years since I regularly shot there last and just getting back into it, and I forget what the etiquette is.  Personally, it doesn’t bother me when someone shoots a loud gun, but I don’t want to be “that guy” annoying everyone else at the range. 

Anyone have thoughts on whether it’s appropriate?  Would be shooting mostly comped 5.56 and .308.  Thanks.

It's best to not shoot near children with that comp.  Also if possible, keep an empty bench on either side, or far left side without benches if it's open.

Brakes can give out a powerful blast to the sides even from a 5.56 depending on the design.  Most people don't realize it, but it can damage hearing for those to the side of you and double hearing protection maybe needed.

I never do.  i developed the ability to turn off my hearing after getting married and having kids.

You can shoot whatever legal firearm with whatever legal firearm accessories or attachments.  It’s a gun range.  Guns are loud.  If someone is going to a gun range expecting it not to be loud, they’re in for a rude awakening.  You can be considerate and try to keep a bench between you and the next guy, but if someone sits at that bench, by no means does that mean you need to case that firearm because it’ll be too loud.  Nor does it mean you can’t take an empty bench because there’ll be someone next to you.  Just kindly let them know that your guns boom is pretty nuts.  And blast away!  Personally, I don’t have brakes on my rifles, but I’ll be damned if someone is gonna Karen me out of enjoying my range day.  At Schofield some dudes was blasting 50BMG, and that cannon was compressing my chest from like 30 feet away!  I was in awe.  But if someone said to the OIC, “Excuse me, but that gentleman’s rifle is a little too loud for my liking.  He needs to shoot something else less bothersome…”, that guy can go pound sand…

I dont mind the loudness. Comes with the territory
Once had a lady tell me to move over a lane bc my hot 44mag loads were too loud. Of course, I politely declined her suggestion. She should be next to me when I shoot my 450 Bushmaster with the brake  >:D

This article goes over how gunfire sound works.  It measures the sound to the rear and to the sides of the muzzle, not quite where a neighbor would be at Koko Head, but close enough.  Not sure if you are referring to a pure compensator only which isn't as loud, or comp/muzzle brake.

When you hear gun fire, your ears are almost maxed out on loudness.  So bigger calibers and muzzle brakes aren't as loud as they seem.

Looking at the chart below comparing no muzzle brake to the loudest one, it's a 14 decibel difference, or 10%.  The perceptual loudness scale is logorithmic instead of linear, so it sounds 3 times louder, that's pretty noticeable.  That's perceptual, what it sounds like.  However when we get to sound intensity, or what the difference in energy really is, it's around 25 times.  25 times the damage your ears are receiving with a brake compared to no brake.  This is why it's important to keep distance between shooters or use double hearing protection.

Exactly. It’s a shooting range, what does one expect? I have “middle of the road” comp on my AR and bolt actions. I’ve been next to folks with heavy side venting brakes, to the point where it knocked over my spotting scope. To me, if I see someone shooting prone next to my bench, I’ll typically wait between their strings. If I’m shootings prone, then whatevers.

I have a net when I’m shooting ARs, but it’s rare these days. Usually go zero. But I am aware of where my brass is flying. Occasionally I’ll have someone next to me where the brass is hitting me. That’s part of the experience of being at the range. As long as they are not obnoxious, all good.

If the options are space between shooters or someone wearing double hearing protection, then it’ll have to be the latter.

Comps and brakes are definitely common at the range.
Listen for the loud boom and try not to pick table next to ‘em.
If you move in next to people, it’ll help ‘em with their flinch.  :D
Still messes me up. The wind and boom when I’m not expecting it middle of aiming and shot.
Just gotta laugh and reset.

I appreciate when people like the original poster think about others and try to accommodate others, however i don't believe it is their duty. If you go to a gun range and are offended by the sound a gun makes, then you are the one with issues, not the other person.
I frequent the silhouette side, and am always shaken awake when Dennis fires his hand cannon, but he has every right to. Plus i think it's kinda cool, but that's just me.
