The missiles being used cost tax payers about $400K each.  That doesn't include the cost of the jet, fuel and manpower (pilot, WSO/Nav, ground crew, etc, etc.).

One balloon downed over Alaska was likely a $12 balloon launched by a hobby group who tracks balloons via an onboard GPS transmitter.  Club members use an app to track its path.  Last reported location was near Alaska where the WH reported a balloon was killed by a missile.

Not sure if letting a Chinese spy balloon travel across the US is more embarrassing than spending a million bucks shooting down a $12 hobby balloon.
