Technically, the law says any rifle mags that can function in a pistol is prohibited -- including AR platforms.

HOWEVER, HI law also says any AR pistol can't have a removable magazine and/or a semi-auto action.  That disables the characteristics that would allow it to function as a removable magazine in a legal AR pistol.

So, logically, >10rd mags are okay for AR rifles.  Additionally, the 10rd mag limit hasn't been enforced since I've been here (22 yrs).

I'd give you a 98% chance that you're safe -- at least until HI law changes to ban all >10rd mags in all firearms.

Yes, Colt or Colt style 9mm AR-15 mags are good to go in Hawaii. I have several 20 and 32 rounders for my Colt 9mm AR-15.

IMHO, the Colt-style Metalform mags, with the metal followers are better (more reliable feeding), than the ASC mags with the plastic/polymer follower.  and yes, the Metalforms are harder to get.  They do get rebranded on occasion by Brownells and PSA.  Barrel feed-cone geometry has a lot of influence on reliable feeding, some barrel brands do it better than others.  Rudy at Macon Armory is able to work magic on problematic barrels, but his prices have gone up significantly for this service, as have prices for damn-near everything else.

Can you explain how this applies to whether > 10rd mags are prohibited or not?  I must have missed something you implied, which is why i'm probably not invited to many parties.

I thought it had already been agreed upon that the Colt-style 32rd 9mm mags were GTG for the Colt-style 9mm AR carbine in Hawaii.  I thought that horse had already been beaten dead.  so was just providing some additional insight.  that's all.

I guess I completely missed the party, darn-near necro thread.
