When is it enough?
« on: March 06, 2023, 05:22:37 PM »

FOR most people becoming blind would be a living nightmare - but for Jewel Shuping it was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. Jewel, 30, from North Carolina, USA, has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled. Her need to lose her sight was so strong that in 2006 she decided to blind herself - by having a sympathetic psychologist pour DRAIN CLEANER into her eyes. As a young child she would spend hours staring at the sun in a bid to damage her eyes, acquiring her first white cane aged 18 and becoming fully fluent in braille by the age of 20. Tired of being secretive due to the stigma surrounding the condition, Jewel is now sharing her story to help raise public awareness of BIID and to encourage people with the condition to seek professional help.

I hate to state the painfully obvious, but ...

No changes necessary -- you were already sporting a couple of disabilities.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

Appears to be related to Munchausen Syndrome.

Quote
Munchausen syndrome (also known as factitious disorder imposed on self) is a
mental health disorder where you falsify, exaggerate, or induce physical, emotional
or cognitive disorders.

People with factitious disorders act this way because of an inner need to be seen
as ill or injured, not to achieve a concrete benefit, such as getting medications or
financial gain. This is distinguishable from malingering which is where someone
exaggerates or fakes an illness to, for example, get out of work.

If you have Munchausen syndrome, you may undergo painful or risky medical tests
and operations in order to get the sympathy and special attention given to people
who are truly ill. You may secretly injure yourself to cause signs of illness. You may
add blood to your urine, or use a rubber band to cut off circulation to a limb. Some
people will cut or burn themselves, poison themselves, reopen wounds, rub feces or
dirt into a wound to cause infection, or eat food contaminated with bacteria.

if I were blind from birth, I'd sue this person for disability appropriation.  She's making the unfortunately blind people "look" bad.  (Pun intended).

Hey!  Wait a minute.

This is labeled as a disorder, but those weirdos wanting to mutilate themselves are NOT disordered, by liberal definition?

Hearkens back to the homo mafia blackmailing the APA to not  include their sickness in the DSM.

This goes against my libertarian side somewhat but I hope she sues the crap out of the psychologist that helped her...

I didn't know Libertarians were okay with medical professionals facilitating a person doing harm to themselves -- physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients being an exception.

So, if your mentally ill brother wants to pour gasoline over his head and immolate himself, his mental health providers should give him an Aloha gas card and a Bic?  Because, you know, individual freedom?

She should be disqualified from any benefits afforded to disabled people.

Oh yes.  Agree 100%.  She authorized to get blinded, therefore it is self-inflicted.

I'm really concerned about the state of mind of America's people.  Seems more and more people are acting strange, confused, selfish, and self entitled.

All of this sh*t is even making me question my sanity. ;)

I wouldn't worry.  Like Richard Prior's father told him:  You ain't gotta worry about going senile.  If you do lose your mind, you won't know it!

I don't know if I would go that far, at least not since she is realizing she made a mistake and admitting to it. And I have to wonder if she didn't already have some other genuine disability which lead her to be duped by her psychologist. I wonder if she had the mental faculties to understand what was going on.

Depends on where on the spectrum of libertarianism one stands.

Depends on where on the spectrum of libertarianism one stands.

Since you were talking about yourself, it shouldn't be difficult for you to articulate where on that "spectrum" YOU stand and why you think a medical decision to protect someone from themselves is in any way a political one -- unless all your health-related beliefs are predicated on your political beliefs.

Your failure answer to my previous question has been duly noted -- once again.

Where I stand? If an adult wants to mutilate their bodies (sex changes, piercings, breast enlargements, etc) I generally won't try to stop them legally.

Your question is not a serious one, it was an extreme one meant to sound insane so yes, I didn't bother answering

So much for being a Libertarian.

Americans, and other well developed countries, have it so well.

I’ve seen it somewhere, when humans have it too well off, they start to forget about the REAL difficulties one needs to endure to exist. They then start to create problems out of thin air.
