Long Gun Permit Renewal
« on: March 11, 2023, 08:46:44 PM »
My permit is going to expire next month and I would like to renew it but do I have to start all over again and go in person with all the paperwork? Thank you.

Same process.  Only difference is you don't have to pay the one-time fingerprint/RAPBACK fee.

I believe you can get the permit emailed to you rather than having to go pick it up.

Also, I think you must wait to apply no sooner than 2 weeks before expiration.  That way the renewed permit begins after the prior other one expires.

Why don't  you go to a free
state buy it and bring it back here.
And then do stupid and register it?

Really?

He never said he was in the market for a long gun, just that he wanted to renew his permit.

Lots of uses for a current long gun permit.  For example, having it in-hand when attending a gun show -- just in case a sweet deal presents itself..

As Flapp said, same process. Yes you should be able to have it emailed to you, just remember to go online and request the emailed permit after you do the in person paperwork. Also don’t forget to take a picture of your form with your password on it.

The form you fill out at HPD becomes the actual permit to acquire so you need the number in the upper right hand corner of that form when you apply online to have a copy emailed to you. When I get a gun registration emailed to me, I get a separate email with the password to open the registration attachment. I have always picked up PTAs at HPD because I'm impatient and they open late on Wednesdays . . . thanks HIFICO!!!

You must request the PTA sent by email when you apply for the PTA in person, then you sign a paper. The online email request is for the registration

Hmm

I just did my long gun and two pistols last week. Both times they had me fill out my online permit info in person but I still had to go online and complete the “online permit to acquire form”

https://www.honolulupd.org/permit-to-acquire-form/

If I didn’t do that they wouldn’t email it.  Maybe I misunderstood and am doing more than I needed to but that’s what I was told.

i haven't used the system in years, but it sounds like you only needed to do the online application in order to request the permit be mailed to you.  Requires a digital signature.

I've applied a few times within the past few months, last time 3 weeks ago. I've never filled out that form. Unless it's new within the past 3 weeks

All good Stang, these guys always making changes.

If I hadn’t gone last week I’d have no idea.  Who knows by the time OP goes they may have them do something else.

I see eye to eye with most people here, one or two excepted.
I have family on the mainland( where all my guns are)
Airfare is 1/8 the price of an AR10 in Honolulu.
AND I DON'T HAVE TO BEG your cops for permission.
Price wise it is a wash, If I wanted an AR10.
That is just an example.
Y'all need to think out of the box.
We are never going to vote our way out of this in Hawaii.
Too many stupid people here.

How long does a long gun permit last, I'll be going through the process for my rifle that will be coming in.

1 year for the PTA.  meaning you can buy as many as you like in the 1 year.  the registration for any firearm lasts forever, so no need renew the registration
pistol PTA only lasts for 10 days.  iirc.
