When I rode I would get stuck in certain intersections when there was no traffic. Motorcycles don't always have enough magnetic signature to set off the sensor. I don't see this as a special rule to cater to motorcyclists, rather just making sure riders don't get tagged for something they cannot help
So, how long did you sit at those lights? Was it always after 11pm and before 5am? How many cops were sitting there just waiting to tag you?
(1) motorcycles aren't being tagged for something they cannot help; nowhere was there any mention of two-wheeled riders being tagged for running red lights that don't change, and
(2) nobody said anyone is catering to bikers. This doesn't just affect motorcycles. it also affects moped and bicycle riders.
The fact that someone wants to make this a law shows where their priorities are. Is there really nothing more pressing on their plates right now?
Sitting at a light waiting for it to change for longer than one cycle of the traffic signals is a good indicator that you have to make a decision. Regardless of time of day, you should be aware enough to judge if there's a car approaching to trigger your signal or whether or not you can safely run the light. A law that specifies the times and conditions under which you can legally run a light is just more nanny-state micromanagement meant to remedy a problem only those who write tickets have a problem with. Seriously, how many moped riders after 11pm are running red lights after stopping and where cops are watching?
It's not about safety, as i said already. "You don't have to wear a helmet, AND you can run red lights when we say you can." That's why the title is about dumb people making laws.
If they think you are okay to decide if you want to protect your head in a crash, then why not just say "red lights don't apply to motorcycles, mopeds or bicycles at the front of a lane at an intersection while waiting on it to change green?" Why make it so confusing and arbitrarily limited? So, add to the "right on red" a new "proceed on red" exception for bikers. just like right on red, you should stop before continuing through the intersection to make sure it's safe to do so.
