We have dumb people making laws

We installed red light cameras to catch people and we have an unprecedented number of accidents.
Then we do this: https://www.khon2.com/local-news/go-on-red-motorcycles-bikes-mopeds-may-get-green-light/

Go on red? Motorcycles, bikes and mopeds may have different rules in the near future.

There is a bill advancing through Hawaiʻi’s Legislature that would allow certain vehicles to make their way through red lights. “The intent was knowing that those are the less traveled hours,” said Rep. Darius Kila, (D) House Committee on Transportation Vice Chair. “Motorcycles are able to follow cars to trigger the green lights, right; but when it’s just themselves traversing the roads at night, you might not have a car for almost five minutes.”

If there's not enough traffic to trigger the light, then there's probably no cop watching, either.

if you do get pulled over between 11 pm and 5 am, it's doubtful you'll get a ticket even without a law.

Just make sure your registration , insurance and operator's license are all up to date.

Ironically, this was in the article:
Quote
“There’s got to be a better way than telling them just go ahead and run the red light,”
said Ret. Lt. William Hankins, Former Maui Police Department Traffic Commander.
“By telling them to run the red light, we’ve given them a green light to get killed.”

That, in a state that doesn't require adults to wear a helmet.

As a rider it sucks getting stuck at a light coming home from work at 2am. Maybe they could just keep it to certain hours?

Look left, look right, no blue light, awwwwwrite!  ;D

According to the article, the bill limits "go on red" to between 11 pm - 5 am.

I've had bikes since my sophomore year in college.  Time of day is a factor in how long before another vehicle might approach and trigger a signal change.  However, just because side street traffic is less dense after 11 pm doesn't mean the main thoroughfare is not busy.  Also, some streets in places other than downtown might not see constant traffic from 5 am - 11 pm.  Setting a timeframe just ensures bikers will be running red lights whether or not there's a car approaching the light sensors -- because they can.

This should be based on (1) is there no other traffic to trigger the signal, and (2) is it safe to cross the intersection.  That's the criteria I always used after waiting for a sensor to see me.  I admit to running red lights quite regularly when I rode, especially if I was at the front of a line of cars in a turn lane.  Can't sit and impede the flow just because the signal is "stuck."

Maybe we just need to join the police department.  Motorcycle cops seem to go as fast as they want and run lights whenever they want.

Just saying...

So in Taiwan, since they have a majority moped usage, they allow at lights all the mopeds to go between cars and go in a special area in the front at traffic lights. It's like a 10 foot deep box and how ever long  that direction of road is.

But moped operators are different there. As soon as the light is green, they're gunning it. Unlike here where mopeds often go very slow. So this works there, but I don't see it working here.

Wait a minute.  Saiki was on the news yesterday morning taking credit for this.  So who is supposed to get credit? [sarcasm\]

That these politicians can just show up when news crews are covering stuff like this and claim credit :grrr:  and even worse, people see that and believe it. . .

That's funny, I just got a ticket for expired registration. Sadly as vehicle reg is cresting $600 a year (I own heavy cars) , more and more people i talk to say it's cheaper to just pay the $70 ticked every once in awhile.

Now, I used to ride motorcycles and I can say for a fact bikes don't trigger the sensors to change the lights. In all my years of riding, I don't believe I've ever had a green light to make the left into Maunawili at Castle junction.

Watching more of this years legislative session, HI loves to just keep adding more laws to the books.

C&C had a bill about Hawaiian language or something. Like there isn't more important stuff to work on.

The state side, they had a hearing on vaping.  Not raising the age or a total ban, but IIRC banning fruity type flavors like passion orange guava, or shaved ice because these flavors appeal kids.  I'm sure this is the sole reason why kids vape, is to taste POG.  Cause you know, kids also take up smoking cause cigs taste good right?  Then all the tards submitting zoom or in-person testimony against this too.  Not 1 person mentioned how it's already illegal and yet kids are getting their hands on vapes.  I could understand if they made harsher penalties for selling to minors or if a minor is caught with a vape. But no, this was just to ban flavors.

Then before our sensitive places bill, they wanted to tax mom n pop Air BnB 25%. Almost all the testifiers mentioned the constitution and unfair taxation.  I had a laugh, cause you know, 2A.  Another hearing had something about property managers and violating peoples constitutional right. Many quoted the Constitution and 1 actually stayed behind to testify against the sensitive places bill cause that too violates the constitution.

So the story is there are lots of BS bills and hearings, when the important issues remain untouched.  Imagine every year, we add in 150 more laws.

When I had my hog I installed a device that would trigger the pads in the road and give the bike the same magnetic signature as a car. Worked pretty well just can’t remember the name……. If this dumb ass bill passes it’s gonna be a blood bath. Let the games begin! >:D

So do they not have any censor available that works with moped weights at minimum?  If there is, then this is a pretty huge mess up to only install the ones that require 2K lbs or more.

My parents condo, 1 could walk on their censor and open the garage door.  Mopeds do park in this garage.

That intersection above my mom's house when i was in college was triggered by pressure on a plate.  If it didn't sense my bike, i could usually stomp my foot and make it change.

I learned that trick when i was much younger.  We used to wait for a car to approach from the cross street, then run into the road and make the light change.  Kids doing kid stuff.

Most lights use a timer or an induction loop -- or both.  The timer keeps the main road flowing so the side streets are not triggering the light every minute.  The sensor lets the side street traffic get the green if it's been red a minimum amount of time.

While that sensor I described earlier is a pressure plate that measures changes in weight, most now use the induction loop -- a few wires buried under the pavement which looks for a change in frequency from the circuit.  Most vehicles other than a bicycle can trigger the sensor.

Where induction circuits are not feasible (areas of heavy rain, rough road, etc.), sometimes they use video-detection.  There are several other methods/solutions for sensing traffic at intersection, including pedestrian traffic.

Here's a pretty good discussion of most sensors.

When I rode I would get stuck in certain intersections when there was no traffic. Motorcycles don't always have enough magnetic signature to set off the sensor. I don't see this as a special rule to cater to motorcyclists, rather just making sure riders don't get tagged for something they cannot help

So, how long did you sit at those lights?  Was it always after 11pm and before 5am?  How many cops were sitting there just waiting to tag you?

(1) motorcycles aren't being tagged for something they cannot help; nowhere was there any mention of two-wheeled riders being tagged for running red lights that don't change, and

(2) nobody said anyone is catering to bikers.  This doesn't just affect motorcycles.  it also affects moped and bicycle riders.

The fact that someone wants to make this a law shows where their priorities are.  Is there really nothing more pressing on their plates right now?

Sitting at a light waiting for it to change for longer than one cycle of the traffic signals is a good indicator that you have to make a decision.  Regardless of time of day, you should be aware enough to judge if there's a car approaching to trigger your signal or whether or not you can safely run the light.  A law that specifies the times and conditions under which you can legally run a light is just more nanny-state micromanagement meant to remedy a problem only those who write tickets have a problem with.  Seriously, how many moped riders after 11pm are running red lights after stopping and where cops are watching?

It's not about safety, as i said already.  "You don't have to wear a helmet, AND you can run red lights when we say you can."  That's why the title is about dumb people making laws.

If they think you are okay to decide if you want to protect your head in a crash, then why not just say "red lights don't apply to motorcycles, mopeds or bicycles at the front of a lane at an intersection while waiting on it to change green?"  Why make it so confusing and arbitrarily limited?  So, add to the "right on red" a new "proceed on red" exception for bikers.  just like right on red, you should stop before continuing through the intersection to make sure it's safe to do so.

I'd like to see the text of the bill.  Seems like there would be a stipulation the biker needs to stop at the red before running it, just like the Right on Red law says.  I don't think they intend to let you blow through the light at the posted speed limit.
