Essential AK Mods
« on: November 24, 2012, 01:01:42 AM »
Well it has been about a week since I picked up my SLR101 and I've been trying to think of what to do next, besides get an SGL21. Being new to the realm of AK's I've been looking around various forums learning the ins and outs and whats available for various milled and stamped AK pattern rifles. I'd like to know everyone else's favorite mods when it comes to improving the AK.

So far other than order a ton of surplus steel AK mags all I have done is install a US Palm AK grip. I gotta say the new grip is an immense improvement for less than $30 shipped and I like the contrast of the red bakelite against the black rifle.

Bulgarian circle 10 waffle mag.
(At least 1. It looks great and is the best magazine ever)

Ultimak gas tube rail.
( To me it's the best mod you can do for the AK. I can hit consistently all the way out to 250 yards with a cheap red dot mounted on an ultimak)

AK74 style muzzle brake
(Looks much better than the fish gill flash hider IMNSHO)

I'd have to put a rail + red dot at the top.  After that, I would be looking to modify the safety to make sure all I need to do is sweep it with one hand.

And yeah, the Circle 10 mags are great.

An optic mount of some kind is high on my list. I was looking at the MI or RS 30mm side mount for my PRO or the ultimak and a sparc red dot. But after seeing com bloc customs site yesterday I really want an ironwood designs stock and handguard finished by them first.

I don't know what your trigger is like but the one on mine was crap. I put a Tapco G2 in it, much better now. :shaka: Also put a Tromix oversized charging handle,a Krebs modified safety lever with the bolt hold open and some Chinese mags from bunker.

I'm sure I have new AK/74 style muzzle brakes if you want to upgrade that.

A drum mag seems to make a good "Just in case that thing hits the fan" add on....while they're still available

+1 on the Ultimak gas tube rail like KK said.... I'm gonna grab a couple for both my SLR's... great reviews but mostly cuz KK said... ;D

I've been waiting for a russian or romy top loader to show on gunbroker. It seems like every time a good deal comes up the seller won't ship to Hawaii.

If you find a good deal, let me know.

I can get it shipped to Hawaii.

Personally, top-notch drums are your pre-ban Chinese and original Russian if you can find one but you'll pay a premium. Just my opinion.

I regret not getting a russian top loader when they were going for ~150 on gun broker 3-4 months ago. Now the romanian ones are 140+ and I can't find any original soviet examples for sale. I'd go for a preban chinese since they seem much more common but nothing new production, at least none of the shitty 75 round open back ones that are all over the web currently.

I do in fact but not sure I want to sell any. I have new Factory 36 and 9396 that I purchased in the 80s. I prefer Factory 9396. Here is a link about the old drums.

fstbckgt, well, if you are in the market for a side mount, i do have the K-Var one for sale in the classified section.  test mounted but never taken to the range.

as far as other mods, strictly ergonomically speaking, installing an AR-style buffer tube adapter is great.  Then you can run any type of Mil-spec AR buttstock.  i had one on my rifle, but decided i preferred the classic look over comfort.

This is the mod I have considered most, but since my AK has 2 tangs that would need to be removed I'm not sure.

The US palm grip is a very good choice. The red bakelite color looks great. I also like the Hogue mono grip with storage cap. One day I might try the Hogue fore end. Oddly enough an Iraqi American introduced me to the Hogue ak grip.Tapco G2 trigger assy's, have been installed on nearly all of my ak's. I  tried the adjustable trigger sold by power custom but I rather have the G2,since there is less to worry about and it is closer to the original design. I use the Meprolight tritium sights however the recent production sights do not have the correct sight settings as the older ones. I got no response from meprolight in regards to this but the sights are still ok. The front sight is only adustable by full turn increments due to the tritium insert.
