Redhawk off gunbroker
« on: April 28, 2023, 02:13:31 PM »
So bought a redhawk off of Gunbroker and just picked it up from my FFL today. FFL said they noticed some carbon in the cylinder (it was supposed to be brand new) and when I opened up the cylinder it seems there’s some shearing going on with the portion of the barrel that faces the cylinder. Has anyone had experience contacting a seller  on gunbroker about an issue with a firearm purchase? Any advice on what I should do? Should I just contact ruger directly?

Can you post a link to the listing or the Item Number.  The item number is in the link.  It's also just below the picture in the listing.

I ask, because it's difficult to answer without knowing some of the details in the listing.  Each item can have different terms, and each seller can have different policies.

How long has it been since the pistol arrived at the FFL?  If it was sitting for the 2 weeks needed for the PTA, then you could have a problem unless the seller subtracts the days it sat at the shop waiting on you to get a permit.  Rather than post a bunch of if-then-elseif-then-elseif-then-else guesses, the listing will help provide some of the important details.

Have you contacted the seller yet?  The sooner you do, the less of a problem it might become.

Manufacturers test fire guns before shipping them out, they don't clean them.  Could it be that or is there evidence of more use?  I've purchased many NIB guns that where filthy,

That’s what I thought to but FFL told me they clean them. I’m not to worried about the firings I’m mostly irritated about the sheared/nicked barrel. The dirty cylinder was just kind of just another thing to complain about. I’m wondering now if someone was firing that thing and slamming the cylinder shut like the old western movies where they spin the cylinder and slam it shut. I noticed a bit of rubbing but I pulled out my GP100 and the cylinder touches the rear of the barrel but there’s no nicks.

Yeah, that might be a problem.  There should be a very slight gap (.004"-.006") between the cylinder and barrel.  Should NOT be touching at all.

If I open the cylinder there is a slight back and forth play. I assume that’s necessary for the cylinder to rotate. However if I push the cylinder as far forward as possible and try to close it it definitely catches the barrel. Do you think I should just contact ruger directly?

BTW, you will in all likelihood be responsible for the cost of return shipping.  So, factor that in, too -- I didn't see it in the terms of the listing, so it wouldn't hurt to ask for them to pay it.  Hopefully he's able to just print you a label to take to UPS or FedEx so you won't have any problems shipping a pistol out of state.

If you send it to Ruger, they will charge for repairs if it's not covered under warranty.  Maybe you can get them to agree to pay for repairs and shipping to Ruger?  Or they pay for repairs and you pay for shipping?

Given the reviews for this guy, I'd be inclined to think he'll work with you if you're polite and reasonable.

If it were me, I'd ask for a replacement if they have one, and I'd request they pay shipping for the return, too.  If they don't have another, I'd have to go the refund route and chalk up the return shipping as a cost of doing business on the Internet.

Good luck!

Got in touch with ruger. Sounds like they will take care of repairs and since it’s under two years old they will take care of shipping both ways.

Can I send my firearm directly to Ruger and have it shipped back to me?

We have threads about that.

Short answer is yes.

Long answer is, no, not by yourself.

Ruger is an FFL and should have an account with FedEx and UPS.  Ruger should be able to email you a shipping label/invoice.  You have to take it to the main shipping office on Lagoon near the airport.

When the work is done, Ruger can ship it directly back to you.    It should require an adult signature upon delivery.  If no one is available to receive the package, you need to go to the main office and pick it up.

An exception is if Ruger decides to replace the firearm rather than repair it.  In that case, they have to ship it to your FFL here, and you get the pleasure of applying for a new permit to acquire.  You'd also have to notify HPD you no longer have the original Ruger.

Coordinate with Ruger for the shipping label and packing requirements.

Hey flapp i noticed you mentioned it has to go to main office by airport. I found the other threads about shipping and I didn’t see that explained. Where did you read that it has to go to main office?

First, find out which shipping company Ruger will be using, so you don't waste time researching more than that one.

Then go read the policies of that shipper re: firearms.

UPS site says this:
Quote
Note: Firearm Products are not accepted for shipment via UPS Drop Boxes or
UPS On-Call Pickup®, and may not be tendered to, dropped off, or picked up
at locations of UPS Customer Centers, The UPS Store®, any third party retailer,
or any UPS Access Point™ location, with the sole exception that pre-packaged,
pre-labeled Firearm Products may be dropped off at UPS Customer Centers.

FedEx says you can drop it off at any FedEx location, but i seem to remember it was stricter a few months ago. But, when i use their Location Lookup and filter for Dangerous goods shipping, i only get 2 results; the office off of Lagoon and one at 700 N Nimitz Hwy.

Policies and existing locations change over time.  If you know which shipper, best thing is to call and check if the location you want to use is allowed to accept firearm shipments to the mainland.
