I herd that normal students are being forced to flea the city.

What you herd is a rumor started by some rabid journalist.

My theory is this is a fetish for ugly people whose parents had to tie a pork chop around their necks to get the dog to play with them.

Next thing we'll see is students identifying as the Gimp from Pulp Fiction so they can wear S&M outfits.

Young people in today's society are attention whores.

Low esteem, low confidence, poorly motivated, self-entitled attention whores.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

In a nation of over 320M people, how does one compete for attention among all those who garner fame and fortune through entertainment, criminal acts, or politics?

Too many recent examples of people going to the extreme and becoming famous (Dylan Mulvaney, etc.).

Why get a degree and work hard to compete against others in your field for notoriety when you can choose the category that is most popular now to glom onto?

People with disabilities get government benefits, nonstop attention from family and friends who want to help, and special accommodations in school and work.  Not a surprise some attention-seeking people will disfigure or maim themselves to get in on the 'fun."  They can also pretend to have all the symptoms of an "interesting" mental illness for the same reason.
