Ak47 muzzle brake
« on: November 30, 2012, 11:33:32 PM »
Anyone tried replacing the muzzle brake on a ak-47 SLR-101? I pushed down the detent pin but the damn thing won't budge. How do I get the stock muzzle brake off without damaging it?

are you pushing it down towards the ground as if you are holding the rifle horizontally?

you are supposed to push the pin in from the front of the rifle to the back of the rifle...  at least on my arsenal sgl

Yes pushing the pin in towards the butt of the rifle... Once I push the pin in I can't turn the muzzle brake.... It's really tight or stuck in place... I tried using a wrench and towel to spin the brake but it got a little scuffed up and still didnt move at all.

Any suggestions as to how to twist the brake once the pin is pushed in?

If it still wont come off try running something through the holes in the brake to act as a handle.

Remember it's left hand thread.

Turn it the opposite that you normally would anything else

Put a good layer of masking type on the brake. Put the rifle on the vise and use a pipe wrench to turn the brake.

If yours is not of recent production, it may be pinned or welded. A lot of the older import versions were generally pinned.

Its an SLR 101.
It's not pinned or welded and doesn't need masking tape.

Just turn it right to loosen it.

It's a left hand thread.

I think everyone assumed he was turning a left handed thread to the right but that would surely be the first concern. Many were surely pinned post ban...I don't know what flavor he has but if not pinned and turning in the proper direction, it should be straight forward.

I'm turning the muzzle to the right when depressing the pin. it doesn't budge at all.... Never been fired so new out of the box.

Could there be loctited on? Any chemicals to loosen it, don't want to damage it....

run the brake under hot water?  use a blow dryer to heat up the brake?  then try it again?  i am just guessing now.

idk.  like i PM'ed you, mine came right off...  although mine screws off opposite direction of yours.

Loctite has been known to be used on some muzzle brakes. Could be the case with yours. I know some people have successfully used a torch to heat it up and then it comes right off. Maybe there is a chemical but I have no idea. Good luck!

The new import SLR101s are hit or miss. Some screw right off, others won't budge.

Just curious, did you ever get the muzzle brake off? What was the culprit...Loctite?

Can I have your original "fish gill" brake when you replace it?
