Police shot and killed a suspect who was armed with knives and a rifle during a barricade situation in Pearl City on Friday morning, HPD Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said.

Around 4:10 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a burglary at a home on Kalauipo Street in Manana.

Logan said when responding officers arrived, the resident of the home reported that her ex-boyfriend was inside the home, armed with knives. She also said that he had threatened to shoot coworkers and officers.

Officers heard the suspect yelling from inside the home that he was not going to go to jail, Logan added.

At that point, Specialized Services Division officers were called to the scene.

Officers made numerous attempts to convince the suspect to come out, but they were unsuccessful.

At around 6:30 a.m., smoke was observed coming from a bedroom window. About 10 minutes later, the suspect emerged from the home, armed with two knives. He then ran next door and went upstairs to the back balcony, where officers had been previously posted, Logan said.

“The suspect grabbed an unattended rifle and was holding it when officers returned to the balcony,” Logan said. “One of the officers fired at the suspect, followed by a second officer who fired from the neighbor’s yard. A third officer fired at the suspect from the bottom of the stairwell.”

Wow nobody noticed when he ran next door where HPD was set up, went up the stairs and grabbed an HPD rifle that had been left unattended. that could have turned out really really bad, glad no one but the bad guy

Poor training.  Unattended rifle.  By HPD.  Honolulu's "Finest".

Supposedly the Finest.  Or so they say.  Or once believed.

Leaving the rifle unattended by HPD is so unbelievably stupid I have no words for it.

I wonder what the news media would have said if he used an unattended HPD rifle and killed one or more HPD officers with it.

Honestly, if that HPD officer was in the Army or Marines God help him.  An unattended rifle in the military is a no-no.

Since they routinely refer to it as "Gun violence"
I presume they blame the gun it magically pulls the trigger and
the criminal that is holding it is innocent.
Never call it criminal violence.

Hard to believe you guys have to beg these
police for permission to buy guns or conceal carry.

That's an example of the trained professionals some think are the only ones who should be allowed firearms.

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

meant to say that the requirements should apply to their duty firearms. Every duty firearm

About 5 years in San Diego there was a an unattended bolt action that was sitting in the ground outside of a police vehicle. No officers in the vehicle and immediate vicinity. I just kept walking.I forgot what stadium the police vehicles were at.
