maybe we need forklift registration

How do you get someone to register a stolen forklift?

There was a real military doctor killed by a forklift in A-stan some years ago. The contractor who was operating it just had his trial.  The prosecution pointed out that had he not been on his phone, he would have had 6 seconds to see her and press the brake.

I used to wonder about all the people I saw listening to headphones and earbuds when walking, jogging or driving.  Eliminating a primary sense that might keep you from dying or killing someone else for music, audio books or podcasts just bothers me.

Then cellphones came along, and now people have taken sight down that same path.

Some of us are walking/driving the Earth while willfully deaf and blind.  I guess they think taste, touch and smell are enough to be safe?

I have never operated a fork lift, but would 1 need to wear ear muffs?  I ask cause I took a guy to the range and he used his wireless Apple ear buds as his hearing protection. He works with a waterjet cutter and uses the same. I made him wear earmuffs.  When I used to work inside a Foodland, sometimes the guys on the smaller fork lifts would wear ear muffs, and other times they won't. This was my only XP noticing this.

Propane powered forklifts are very loud -- increasingly as the size increases.

I'm sure there are some that are quieter than others, but if they operate indoors (warehouses, ports, etc.) , it gets louder.  The site is supposed to make the workers wear PPE where required.  OSHA gets mad when their rules are broken, and companies get sued when accidents are cause by lax oversight.

Quote
If a FLT (Forklift truck) driver routinely goes into a high noise area to the extent that their
daily exposure is exceeding 85dB(A) then they are at risk of noise induced hearing loss.
This means that over time their hearing may start to deteriorate through the effects of the
exposures and they will eventually no longer be able to hear the screams of their victims
as they run them over anyway, even without hearing protection.

FLT drivers should be looked at closely though as it is particularly important that they are
not provided with too much protection, i.e. hearing protection that is blocking out too much
external noise. What they need is a protector which is getting them down to about say 77
or 78dB under the protector so they are safe from possible hearing loss but also still able
to hear what is going on around them at a decent level.

Or provide a FLT with an enclosed cab that reduces the noise to a safe level without hearing
protection.

So far, in the last couple of days, our illustrious lawmakers are busy at hand drafting laws to ban:

Nissan Pick-ups.

Machetes.

Forklifts.

edited to add:  Maybe bats too.  Not the bloodsucking kind.  The pound your head to mush kind.

That  you were more detailed about the type of bat. Cause you know, the right to "bear" arms is confusing. Our law makers things it only applies to the animal bear and not to possess firearms since they try to ban them all the time.

I have some old machetes.
They better have a grandfather clause in the new anti-machete laws.

First, they will come for Nissan Pickups, then it will be Tacomas, then F-150's and Silverados.
It's a slippery slope.

And while the lawmakers are happily drafting "ban" laws on inanimate objects, the people who wielded them in a violent manner are being released..........

I operated a fork lift a lot during the 5 years I was working in the air cargo department at HA.  We normally didn't wear hear protection unless we were loading the aircraft.  The APU and GPU for the planes were loud.  I didn't think our propane powered lifts were loud at all.  We had a couple battery powered ones that went into the reefers. Those were very quiet.

I drive them for work sometimes. Not that loud.

It takes all my concentration to not kill or injure people though.

Btw this is my second favorite scene from Aliens, after the sentry guns of course

IIRC You have to earn a forklift license.
So you are registered to use one, OSHA rules.
I was never registered for fork lifts, just Man lifts.

One of my favorite memories is being up in a basket with an arcing fixture trying to get the attention of the ground guy who turned off his radio so he could kill the power.

Isn't that in one of the Final Destination movies?  Sounds similar ...   :geekdanc:

As for the forklift operator wearing ear muffs it might just be Bluetooth headphones.  I've seen it before and that's dangerous.  :shake: :shake: :shake:
