The trucks were purchased during the pandemic using COVID relief funds.

Nothing like having a pandemic to justify government spending we could not have afforded otherwise.   :wtf:

Quote
The idea was that the pick-ups could be used to respond to calls and conduct traffic stops.

But a little more than a month after the pilot project began, officials confirm the trucks have been ordered off the road and are now being stripped of their blue lights.

HNN Investigates confirmed the department terminated use off all 10 trucks Tuesday. Sources say the internal memo announcing the decision explained the trucks were unsafe for patrol work.

i bet if they were spending state taxes, there would have been established procedures to ensure the vehicles met standards for safety, performance, and law enforcement uses.  Using emergency "relief funds" was just wasteful spending that had absolutely nothing to do with COVID relief.

Looks like a Chevy Colorado.

I can't remember the last time I saw any law enforcement driving a Chevy.

i wonder if they even bothered to order them with Cop motors, Cop tires, Cop transmissions, Cop suspensions, etc.

For the pilot, HPD converted 10 Chevrolet Colorados it bought in 2020 using CARE Act funds.

During the pandemic, they transported tents and other supplies for COVID response.
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2023/06/16/hpd-rolls-out-retrofitted-pick-up-trucks-part-patrol-fleet/

Hauling tents?  They spent COVID relief money on 10 trucks to haul tents?

How much is it to rent a U-Haul?  Oh, here it is ...
Quote
“Trucks will make things easier for on duty patrol police officers to transport a large items such as bicycles, mopeds, as evidence and also the found properties.”

In the past, HPD paid hundreds of dollars for trucks to haul oversize evidence — additional costs to the department’s budget.

So, instead of hundreds coming out of their budget, they used likely over half a million for trucks they can't even use as police vehicles now.

This kind of stewardship is what gives us The Rail and other noteworthy spending programs.

From what I have read trucks generally don't fare as well in crashes so that might be part of it.
Ford does make a version of the F-150 rated for pursuit, maybe there are specific issues with the Colorado?

HPD has long had pickup trucks but they just aren't used for patrol duties. Maybe these trucks will be used to replace those roles.

Why does any of that matter as it relates to the state/police department wasting half a mill on trucks using COVID relief funds and only afterward finding out they can't use them in the roles they used to JUSTIFY spending all that money?

More government incompetence on top of wasteful spending on top of misappropriation of federal funds.

Answer this:  will anyone in the department or administration now be held accountable for spending COVID money on trucks to do "X" but now have to use them for "Y" which no longer justifies using that funding?

It's like me giving you $100 from a special fund for ammo to use in your Glock 17, and you go out and buy .38 special ammo.  Your purchase doesn't conform to the intent of the special fund.  So, do you now have to pay back that $100?  Do you sell the ammo and buy the right ammo?

There's never anyone held accountable for these types of incompetent acts in government.  It's all our tax money, too, whether it's federal, state, city or county tax money.

Big question is
Why do cops need to act like soldiers?
Traffic stops really bother me.  That is
generally a civil
not criminal infraction.
Drunks are one thing, but that is criminal.
and a pickup can do that just fine.
Why do cops exceed the speed limits
that are set by engineers for our safety.
Hey, if they can do over 100 MPH why can't I?
The same road. That engineers said was
only safe for 55 MPH.
Cops are not superhuman have  same bodies as we have.
What makes them special is people skills training
and a willingness( generally) to run to a fight
instead of away from it.

I'd disarm all of them and reserve SWAT for only
special situations.

Maybe they can use those pick ups to help the homeless move house.
This could be a part of community policing and social working that the left
uses to dilute and emasculate the police.

In the mean time, Hawaii County police chief recently approved pick up trucks for privately owned police vehicles. Haven't seen one yet.  If I was a cop I would use a sedan, but most cops on the BI like to use SUVs, especially the Toyota 4Runner.

Most LE would prefer an SUV.  Lots of seating, plenty of storage especially in the rear for gear and weapons, larger engines for more power/acceleration, and above all, higher mass/weight than most cars or trucks on the road.

When two vehicles' paths intersect, the one with the greater mass tends to be much more likely to survive the crash.  i've seen many, many reports of SUV accidents that said the SUV sustained minor damage, but the other vehicle was totaled.

Of course, HPD should only allow EV or Hybrid cars and SUVs for official business.  No sense in killing the planet just so a Cop can afford a gas guzzling SUV!

It's more the feds fault for dishing out more money than agencies could use during COVID.  It created a shopping spree.

In HPD mind it's spend it or lose it.  They'd get a lot of flak for returning money.  It's big gov mentality.  And the money has a lot of restrictions on what it can used for.

The trucks could be considered disposable for COVID.  I'm sure the trucks are a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of dollars of other COVID funded things that weren't needed and are going to waste.

USA just got downgraded from AAA credit rating to AA

Our national interest expense is now $1 trillion

Do robot dogs like riding in the back of pickup trucks?

John McCarthy, deputy chief in charge of HPD operations, defended the department’s spending and said all purchases were reviewed by a newly-created city Economic Revitalization Committee and government attorneys. The mayor had the final say.

“Everything has to be used for COVID. Anything we buy. No matter what it is,” McCarthy said.

“You need these vehicles,” said McCarthy. “A lot of them are specialty vehicles. The ATVs for example. We just didn’t have this.”

The deputy chief said the new vehicles have made officers more efficient conducting their duties. And he added they’re much more prepared to deal with COVID-19 emergencies.

“We get complaints about quarantine violations and mask violations, large gathering violations,” said McCarthy. “This is what’s serving them. Is that excessive?”

Federal authorities recently suggested agencies rent vehicles instead of buying them. When asked about that guidance, McCarthy replied, “The problem is we need police vehicles with radios, lights.”

Honolulu City Councilman Tommy Water, however, said the spending left him “speechless.”

The chair of the Council’s Public Safety committee said the body didn’t have any oversight on how the money was spent.

“I get emails from people every day asking for help and we learn that we’re spending money on ATVs,” said Waters. “When people are hurting, when people need help, it’s hard to justify that.”
