Who still teaches/distributes pistol affidavit. I know the process is changing January 1st but I’m planning to get a handgun before then and only having that one hand gun. And I’m impatient.

Also what is the process from not having the firearm to having the firearm
1. Affidavit
2. Go to HPD for PTA w/all paperwork and serial number
3. If approved you gave x days ti pick up said firearm
4. Pick up firearm
5. Register online?

I’m gonna be a first time owner for rifle and pistol with no saftey class/ certificate taken. I’m assuming this is gtg for both rifle and pistol. I’ve been training with both already. So if I have already been trainjng with these two set of weapons saftey and target shooting wise this should suffice for a PTA

State of Hawaii requires specific class/training on firearm safety and laws for acquiring pistols.  If you've completed the training as noted in the HRS, you're good.  If you are doing other training, say informal or even via instructors that don't meet the requirements of the HRS, then no.

In that case you should probably take a class unless your friend is an instructor that taught you everything and the laws.  A lot of people got "trained" by friends, but majority of the time a lot of things aren't covered and the friends don't know much either.

Rocky in the events forum here teaches once in a while.  Young guns store.  Butch Helemano with North shore marksman.  Couple guys at 808 gun club.

Inquire at Young Guns.  I got my pistol(s) affidavits and training from them.  Also they just so happened to have the pistols I wanted so the whole process of affidavits, training, and purchase was through them.

They are not known to have the best pricing but they are professional and knowledgeable and from my standpoint that matters more than anything else.

Prime Sports has a class also. Was half the price of the 808 gun club, but I thought the 808 was a good class. Teaches firearm mechanics, safety, then about half the class is about responsibility.

IF it's your first firearm, then i cannot stress enough the importance of practice, and a set of rules you will not violate. For me, it was NEVER would i have the firearm and the ammunition in the same room, until i had practiced thousands of rounds. Not until I felt I was proficient, and ready to accept the responsibility of defending my home with lethal force, did my mags ever see a round outside of a range. Dry fire practice. Gun safety practice. Pick it up, put it down. Did you follow the 4 basic rules? Finger on the trigger?  Was it EVER pointed in a dangerous direction? Is it stored safely? I know it's all common sense, but  a couple Brandon Herrera videos will make you see how may people lack common sense.

Sorry quick question for clarification.  I took the hunters ed class around 5 years ago.  If I can somehow find my certificate would that be sufficient for a handgun PTA or is it only good for long guns?  I am a bit confused on whether or not I still need to take the handgun specific course. 

OP please let me know how the process goes as I am in a similar boat.
