“The economy and tourism is a trickle-down effect. Businesses are either shutting down or thinking of shutting down because of the fact that there’s just no people there to shop and patronize,” said President and CEO of Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association Mufi Hannemann.

“You don’t want them also to lose a job or an opportunity to go back to work which is why I’m calling for a very balanced approach to all of this,” said Hannemann.

While visitors are welcome, officials ask tourists to be respectful.

Kalahiki said in another video that what he feared was already becoming reality, adding that people all over Maui were being financially impacted, even losing their jobs or businesses, because people are telling tourists to stay away or confronting the ones who are already there.

He mentioned several celebrities and prominent figures that he thought were acting irresponsibly by telling people not to come, including Momoa.

"Jason Momoa, have fun on your late-night shows throwing spears with your buddies, but what're you guys going to do for us now?" he said.

A representative for Momoa did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Kalahiki urged tourists coming to Maui not to cancel their plans but to vacation responsibly by staying away from Lahaina and instead visiting areas on the east side of the island that were not hit by the fires. He encouraged any tourists to take some time out of their trip to volunteer while they are on Maui and to support local businesses.

So, Lahaina, the most popular "draw' for most Maui-bound tourists is destroyed.

Now tourists can go up Haleakala, the Road to Hana (now that it was recently repaired and reopened), and .... what?

Curiosity will lure many to the fire zone, giving the impression they are disrespectful or simply clueless. 

Sounds like some don't really care about the tourists and their experience once they arrive.  They just want the money they bring.

"Don't worry about having nothing to do or see on your Maui vacation.  Just support our businesses that are still open and be respectful while doing it."
