I had a similar experience. I walked into a gun store in the mainland and bought a box of cast 45 bullets. The man that brought it to the cash register said to me in a very slow manner "You - Do - Realize - these - are- not - loaded - ammunition? Do - you - understand...?"

Technically, I believe, if it looks like an AR-15, and it is not a Colt or Armalite, it is a semi-auto rifle that looks like an AR-15 regardless of the caliber.
