if you really are serious about climate change

drop your brokie Prius and snooty Tesla; step off your brand new 200Tree lifted Tacoma; go out there and pedal to work!

If you make the daily drive over the Pali Highway, chances are you’ve seen Mark Baker riding his bicycle.

That’s how the emergency room doctor at Pali Momi has been getting to and from work — for more than three decades.

When Baker describes himself as very physically fit, you better believe it.

“I like to exercise every day,” he said.

The Kailua resident is an avid cyclist.

“Getting to and from anywhere I can on a bike is more pleasing to me than being in a car,” he said.

The 67-year-old rides his bicycle to and from work, and it’s not just across town. He pedals the 21 miles it takes to get from his front door to Pali Momi Medical Center in Aiea, then another 21 miles going back home.

He rides solo.

I wonder what kind of repetitive stress injuries he has.

This guy must be like a cat and has 9 lives.

Or is it less now.

What's the alternative?

I had an intermediate school teacher who would ride his bike over the Pali Highway almost every day. Too crazy for me.

If I lived where the bike ride was flat then I wouldn't mind riding 3-5 miles.

Once upon a time, I used to ride a bike from punchbowl to bishop street to go to school.
On the weekends I would go all over sightseeing or go beach scope out the girls.

Honolulu has been notorious for pedestrian deaths.

I don't own a motorcycle because I was bumped more than once here sitting at a red light.

If you want to ride a bike and take your life in your hands each time you go to work and home, have at it.

I prefer to not be yet another statistic in the HPD traffic database.

I was in way better shape in my old bike friendly neighborhoods.
It was funny because when they finally painted bike lanes I started having way less close calls.
A lot of people don't know the law used to scream at me to get on the sidewalk.
It's like a predatory instinct kicked in or something, until the lines and signs gave me "permission"
If the news was lying to me I would have heard about it on the news.

an ebike will cut that time in half. Try it. The risk is there whether you are a driver, pedestrian or a cyclist. Drivers are the problem not the other way around. We have the rail and traffic is still bad in the morning and afternoons. Meanwhile, when I look up either from the bike path or in traffic the trains are empty going both ways. But we don't hear about ridership numbers anymore. I remember "someone" saying we have to wait till the school year starts to see ridership go up....crickets...
