Range Report Sunday 12/9
« on: December 09, 2012, 05:58:46 AM »
Got here about 5:30. Came in thru Waimanalu as I heard the direct route is blocked.

Still some benches available. Filling up quickly, though. Weather is clear and breezy. After 3 weeks off from shooting I got the shakes!  :shake:

Got there around 11:30. Took the scenic route via the Pali. Lots of open benches. A friend of mine coming from the Leeward side took 2 hours to get there.

Took two hours to come down the main road because of the event.  If you went up H-3 and down the east coast, you would be golden!  It was almost an hour time difference between those two routes.

Range report.

I didn't wait for a bench at all.

I shot a rifle and handgun from the same bench and threw clay pigeons in the air so the guys next to me could shoot them with their shotguns.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

It was awesome. Ten minute drive, no wait open as can be  People drawing from holsters, rabid fire, people around me rabid firing at 15-20 feet and missing  I think the bowling pins just teetered from fright.
Got to meet GZire, shot his REPR. Awesome rifle. Changed my perspective on a well-designed "piston gun". Smooth recoil. Great trigger. Spot on accuracy from what I could tell. Surefire muzzle brakes work! I can't say I was happy shooting next to the guy at Kokohead though, he was dumping brass all over me in the prone and loaded up on his 30 rnd mags. I got burnt on my left arm. He left after the RO told him not to  load up beyond 30.
I wish the hours were longer and they had toilet paper :shake: Thanks to the RSO that volunteered without them there would be no range time at Schofield. I hope I can return the favor one day.

Thats all? I didnt even pull a trigger today. But watched a lot of empty shells hit the ground.

Left my house in kaimuki at 1030. Got to Hawaii Kai drive at around 1230. Got fed up with the stupid traffic and busted a u. Got back on the freeway to try and go through waimanalo. Stuck in traffic 30 min from vineyard to Pali. When I finally get to Pali exit it's blocked by a fire truck cuz of an accident. Had to do another detour and finally get to the range around 130. Had to rush setting everything up and shooting.

What a day

All benches should be available that early. It's like people who line up to go shopping on black friday or whatever. How hard and what is the chance of this island ever having a second public range put it in.

I left the Punahou area at 8:15 and opted for the scenic Pali/Waimanalo route. I made it to Koko Head at 8:45. I was hoping to try some new 9mm reloads, but the Chinese Gun Club invited me to shoot the 1800Agg pistol match. I figured the best way to test loads is shoot a match. My gun does not like CCI Primers. I had 1 FTF during a rapid fire string. 4.3 grains of 700X seemed a little hot for the 115gr FMJs. 5.0gr of Universal Clays  was also too hot.

I got to the range a little after 8 am Sunday.  I live in town and I went through Kahala.  It wasn't too bad.  Took me about 10-15 minutes longer than it usually takes.  It wouldn've been faster had pedestrians followed the normal traffic light convention and not just crossed wherever they damn pleased.  That and other motorists stopping to let those people cross on a green light.

The range seemed pretty empty, presumably because people were just staying away due to the marathon.  A couple of people who came to the range later in the morning or that afternoon said traffic was really bad and took them a couple of hours!

Went there for my first time sunday. Was stuck in crazy traffic on the freeway next to kahala mall, took me like 2 hours from pearl city to get there. Anyways, finally got there at like 2:10 had to hurry and try my guns out. Had a mossberg 22lr, mossberg 12g, and a arsenal ak. LIked the 22 the best.

For the rest of you folks, I believe there are additional non-military spots opening up in SRGC.  Put your apps in, the worst that happens is they say no for now.
