Inherited items from estate

'Inherited' some items from a family members estate recently after they passed away; pretty sure they were never registered.
They weren't in a will or anything, kind of a "grandpa would want you to have these."

What is my next move? Are these in danger of being taken away?

They won't be taken away.  What happens next primarily depends on if you want to keep the items or sell them

Without a will, the next of kin inherits everything based on probate law.  If that person wants you to have the guns, then they must transfer them to you.

Safest thing is to take everything to a local gun shop/FFL.  They can then transfer everything to you once you have the necessary permits.

The FFL will charge a transfer fee, usually per item, but then everything is done by the book.  Good idea to shop around for transfer fees.

I agree with Flapp, you do not want to get caught with something that you cannot fully, logically explain.  Cops are trained to spot nervousness, inconsistencies, lying etc (not saying that you have tells but that's part of how they make their living), so honesty is really the best policy.  Only a few of the gun shops handle a lot of the estate items, one that I can recommend is Security Equipment.  They know the procedure well and have a lot of experience with such items.

As an example, I once bought a pistol from another LGS, to make a long story short it was never properly transferred to the lgs through HPD and the pistol was confiscated when I brought it in to register (with HPD's "help" it was no problem getting my money back but I would have preferred to have the firearm--oh well).
