Saw this on a dash cam video.  It looked like a guy walking in the crosswalk bent down and stole the front plate of a car stopped at the light -- a car with a dash cam, of course..

Well, sort of.  Unless the plates were attached with magnets, painter's tape or chewing gum, there's no way he unscrewed the plate that quickly even with a powered screw driver.

Apparently, one person pretends to swipe a plate hoping the driver will jump out and give chase.  As soon as he does, another person steals his still running car.

i did some Googling, and there seems to several confirmed license plate scams going around.  One has a person in the passenger seat flagging a woman down saying her plate fell off as he waved one in front of her.  Luckily, she knows her own license plate number and saw the plate was not hers.  If she had stopped, they would have likely robbed and carjacked her.

i couldn't find this specific license plate scam anywhere else, and it's possible the dash cam video was staged.  The dash cam owner explained the scam in his superimposed text.  Since he'd heard of it, he stayed in the car.

Anyway, just passing that on and wondering if anyone else has heard of this.
