We’re comprised enough already

Are you saying we're included?  composed?

Some people just want to watch the world burn?

I am quite idealistic but even I know sometimes you have to compromise.
"I am quite idealistic but even I know sometimes you have to compromise."
I'm on very thin ice on this site at the moment.
That being said, compromise only works if you are dealing with people
ethical enough to honor their words.  That is a rare quality in modern
USA lop sided politics.

And what would have happened if that bill cut too much spending for the more moderate republicans and they voted no? Republicans only have a slim majority, it only takes a few republicans to block a bill. What do you think should have been different about the spending bill which would have made everyone happy?

It's understandable why you would want to believe there is some way to work this out. Uncertainty can be terrifying, especially when it comes to existential national crises.

It seemed like there was no real plan after the move to oust McCarthy.

More like a punishment move and then after that was accomplished, look around and then say, "ok, now that that is done, where do we go from here.....?"

Seems like it anyway.

You didn't answer the question though. It is easy to complain about their failure but often much harder to say how it could have been done so much better

And democrats are going to use that to their advantage.

That was the plan.  in the beginning, the GOP reps who kept not voting for McCarthy used their votes to leverage some concessions, one of which was a rule change that allowed a single member to call for a vote of no confidence to oust the Speaker.

Gaetz's plan worked.  He knew McCarthy would not keep his word about changing he budgeting process, so he played that "no confidence" card.  What happens after is not something he should have to plan.  There are processes in place to elect a new Speaker and appoint a temporary replacement in the meantime.

There were others nominated in the votes before McCarthy won.  I'm sure those names are already being talked about, like Jim Jordon and Steve Scalise.

The vacancy could have been filled by Friday, but the Speaker Pro Tem decided to give everyone a week off instead.

Stop deflecting from the actual issue. This is not about spending cuts, it’s about mccarthy not holding to his word. If Mccarthy put up a single subject bill and got every republicans vote except Gaetz we wouldn’t be talking about this. Gaetz would have zero support to oust him as speaker. How are you just ignoring the fact that McCarthy planned the entire time to remit his deal he made to become speaker? HES the one who made the deal with no intention of honoring it knowing full well that he could be ousted at any point yet he still chose to fuck around, and now he found out.

The omnibus spending bill has become a symptom of a Congress unable to do their jobs.

There are 12 appropriation bills that are supposed to come from the 12 House subcommittees that appropriate funding for all the discretionary programs and expenses Congress wants to support.

When Congress fails to pass individual appropriations bills, the bills will be rolled up into an omnibus bill that only requires one vote to pass it.

Ask yourself, if the individual bills were not good enough to be passed on their own merits, why should they be automatically passed as part of the omnibus bill?  Just to avert a government shutdown?

If Congress could actually do their job and pass a budget by end of Summer, this annual government shutdown on October 1st would cease, and the budget would be less of "everything including the kitchen sink".

Don't forget sometimes 5000 page bills are given to the voters a few  hours prior to the vote.

Pretty interesting video to watch.

They talked about how Shumer brought up non-essential appropriations for vote on the Senate floor instead of the more pressing issues that needed to be addressed.  Makes you wonder about things and the intricacies of how politics work.

Seems like the House busts their asses to form an appropriations bill, then send it to the Senate where those pompous old farts just sit on it.

But I think if they pushed to present these bills way ahead of the closing deadline things would have gone smoother.  What's been happening lately is these appropriation bills are submitted too close to the deadlines and the scheduling for hearings on the floor gets all bottled up.

Kinda like when we were in High School and we studied for our final exams a half hour before.

OMG.  Congress is just like High School.

I wish I'd said that.

Oh, wait!

...
i agree with Gaetz when he says we need to stop these omnibus spending bills year after year.
Nobody, even with a half dozen staffers, can do a deep dive into a more-than-5,000-page
spending bill in the short time they are given and know how they should vote."

I think we need some sort of law which prohibits massive bills that cover lots of things. Make it so that any bill can only cover one particular subject. Not a bill that has everything from rules for schools to environmental rules to military rules to criminal law changes, etc.

A couple of decades ago, if Congress was unable to reconcile the full budget by 1 Oct, they would vote to pass as many of the 12 bills as possible before the deadline.  That  normally kept the military employed, the Social Security checks printing, and the government operating.

Now that the omnibus bills have become the norm as opposed to the last resort before a shutdown, It's become a cudgel with which to force House and Senate members to pass the bill or be blamed for a shutdown.

There's a reason Congress only has an 11% approval rating among voters.
